Breathe in the fresh air of the spectacular Little Switzerland region where you can explore biking and hiking trails and visit an 11th century castle.

Sitting in a quiet corner of Luxembourg, Grundhof is encompassed by the immaculate natural beauty of dramatic escarpments, forested highlands, lush meadows and rolling hills. The village stands on the banks of the Sûre river and shares a border with Germany. Grundhof forms part of the Mullerthal region, which is often called Little Switzerland for its glorious countryside.

A pleasant circular walk starts in the village center and follows the course of the river before weaving in and out of dense woodland. Hike amid sections of the Millebaach Valley and Ernz Noire Valley. Along the way you’ll encounter caves, gorges, streams and waterfalls.

Another option is to explore by bike. A scenic road runs parallel to the river and passes through a number of pretty villages. Among these is Echternach, home to the 7th-century Abbey of Echternach, Basilica of Saint Willibrord and Trooskneppchen lookout point. From here you can return via Berdof, well-known for its local cheeses. Alternatively, travel further south to Wasserbillig, at the confluence of the Moselle and Sûre rivers.

Less than a 10-minute drive to the west is Beaufort, famous for Castle Beaufort. Erected in the 11th century, the castle has buildings constructed in the medieval and Renaissance eras. Wander around the ruins, lavishly decorated rooms and pristine gardens. Tours take place from April to November and by prior arrangement at other times of the year.

There are plenty of places to stay in and around the village. Camping is popular in summer and you’ll find campsites set along the river and amid forests. Camping Martbusch has direct access to biking tracks and climbing areas in Mullerthal. Treat yourself to an evening of luxury at Hotel Brimer, which dates back to the early 1900s.

Grundhof is located 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of Luxembourg City. Public buses travel between the two destinations with a connection in Altrier. Free parking is available in the village.

"Great hotel for a good price. Not the best area of Luxembourg but the trams are free and it’s only three stops to the centre, which is lovely."

8/10 Very good! (1,004 reviews)
"Swimming pool was a let down as it was very cold and not the advertised warm water. The pool opens only at morning and evenings. The corridors to the rooms look dystopian from a 1970s movie. The carpets are run down. Breakfast is good but always very very busy. Too. Was good but dated. The building ..."
