Belfast’s majestic Grand Opera House opened its doors in 1895 and since then has played host to some of the biggest names from the world of entertainment. Located in the heart of Belfast’s bustling city centre, this magnificent Victorian building has provided enchanting theatre for over 100 years as well as engaging with the local community and igniting a love of the stage in the city.
It is Northern Ireland’s premier theatre and presents a range of drama, dance, opera, comedy, musicals, pantomime, family and West End shows.
Many of the greats have performed here, including a little known Italian singer by the name of Luciano Pavarotti, who made his UK stage debut in 1963 in the role of General Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly.
A vibrant centre for theatre in the first half of the 20th Century, as civil unrest took over the city in the 1960s the grand old building was in danger of demolition until a campaign to save it eventually achieved its listed building status in 1974.
The Grand Opera House comprises a main auditorium, an intimate Baby Grand studio, a 100-seat theatre space and three separate bars to enjoy a wonderful night’s entertainment. Tickets can be purchased either at the box office or online.
Easily accessible by road or public transport, the Grand Opera House has its main entrance on Great Victoria Street, with Stage Door located on Glengall Street.
