Golden Dragon Museum

Golden Dragon Museum featuring interior views and heritage elements
Bendigo’s rich Chinese heritage is showcased at this museum, which follows the culture’s influence in the city from the gold rush to the present day.

Learn the story of Bendigo’s Chinese community at the Golden Dragon Museum, a dedicated cultural center that has documented, interpreted and preserved Australia’s Chinese heritage since 1991. With its fascinating exhibits, serene gardens and gorgeous architecture, the museum is a fitting tribute to the strong cultural ties that form an integral part of Bendigo’s history.

Walk across the Golden Dragon Museum’s paved forecourt and check out the elegantly stylized architecture. Enter the museum and pick up a brochure or chat with staff to find out about what’s on during your visit. Historical exhibits show the dawn of Chinese heritage in Australia, which begins with the discovery of gold in the region in 1851. Learn about the prospectors who arrived here in hordes to try their luck searching for the precious metal. Working under harsh conditions a long way from home, these early miners marked the beginning of a long and rich relationship with this country.

You’ll see the remarkable processional regalia that were brought to Australia in the 1880s as costumes for the annual Easter Parade. Check out ornate imperial dragons. Other relics in the collection include antique coins, paper money and wax figures.

One of the museums highlights is its exquisite Yi Yuan (Garden of Joy). This beautiful garden is based on that of the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Stroll around the peaceful gardens and see a Buddhist temple and the Guan Yin Miao, a temple dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Visit the dining room to enjoy light refreshments in a lavish setting. The dining room has a capacity for 120 people and is a regular venue for banquets and special events.

The Golden Dragon Museum is located on the northeastern edge of Rosalind Park close to downtown Bendigo. It is a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute drive from the Bendigo Train Station. Admission includes access to the museum displays, gardens and dining room. Ticket prices are discounted for children, students, seniors and families. The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
