Filipstad

Filipstad is a former spa town, famous for its mining tradition and iron ore, and visitors can enjoy sights like the silver mine at Hornkullen.

During the 19th century Filipstad was a famous spa and mineral water town thanks to the springs at Kallhytte Brunn. The spring is still there today, and it doesn't even freeze up in winter. This has long been an area of great natural resources, especially iron ore and silver, and Filipstad had its most prosperous time in the 18th century due to the blossoming mining industry.

While on holiday in Filipstad, you can pay a visit to Hornkullen Silver Mine, where you can go on a guided tour down into a mine shaft. This mining area is a unique memorial to the Swedish mining industry. You should also make time for a hike across Hogbergsfaltet. This small area boasts around fifteen mining pits and you can enter the horizontal shaft Tilas Stoll.

Apart from the rich mining history, Filipstad also offers a unique and fascinating natural environment to explore. On Hogbergsfaltet there is a unique flora, and you can for instance discover the rare orchid Purpur Knippero. Another unique environment is the ice age delta of Brattforsheden, where you can see geological formations such as sand dunes, ravines, eskers, dead ice kettles and bogs. Brattforsheden also has a rich and endemic flora which you can explore along hiking trails and paths.

If you are interested in architecture and town planning, a holiday in Filipstad won't disappoint. Visit the beautiful Skavnaset Chapel by Lake Yngen, or the mythical Brattfors Church, where one of the hatches in the turret always stays open in accordance with a legend from the 19th century. Perhaps the most fascinating church of all is Rammens Church, in the middle of Lake Nasrammen.

Walk past the extraordinary island Monitorholmen, which is really three islands that have been connected and built up in the shape of the military vessel Monitor. This legendary ship gained victory over the American South's Merrimac during the American Civil War. Filipstad was the birthplace of the famous Swedish writer and actor Nils Ferlin. Visit the Ferlin Museum and the Statue of Ferlin and take a seat next to the smiling Nils Ferlin made of bronze gazing out over River Skiller.

No matter who you are and what you're interested in a holiday in Filipstad in Sweden will be guaranteed to take you on an unforgettable journey into Swedish history. Experience life in a traditional mining town with surrounding historical buildings and spectacular nature.

A really nice change
Beautiful small hotel in a converted church. Rooms aren't large but they are very clean and well furnished. Owners are very nice and very helpful. Nothing really for us at breakfast as we have dairy allergies and are vegan anyway, but I know a small boutique hotel can't cater for everyone so no problem ...
