Site of former Elslack station, 1996. View NW at bridge over the course of the ex-Midland Skipton (to right) - Colne (to left) line, a useful cross-Pennine connecting line. The station had been below on the right and was closed as long ago as 3/3/52, but the line survived until 2/2/70.

The 'Tempest Arms', Elslack, Yorkshire Many years ago, 'Mine Host' at the Tempest was the former Middlesex and England cricketer Peter Parfitt, who went on to supervise hospitality at the Headingley ground of the Leeds Football and Cricket Club - better known as a Test Match ground and home of Yorkshire Cricket Club. Parfitt was succeded as incumbent at the Tempest by the redoubtable Frenchman, Francis Pierre Boulogne, who presided for many years and established an excellent culinary reputation for the pub, which still continues, and in addition, accommodation is now available. As footnote to the serious beer drinker, Timothy Taylor's 'Landlord', (which, I am reliably informed, is Madonna's favourite beer!) is on draught here.

Room was nice and clean, but was quite cold overnight. Staff were very welcoming. We didn’t use the pool/gym facilities but it’s good that the option was there. There were people opening the fire door to smoke at the end of the corridor on the 4th floor, which lead to the whole corridor stinking ...

Breakfast was good, they cleared tables but didn't always clean them, which was a shame. Parking is good but then there is a walk along an alleyway between the hotel and the bowling venue. It seems safe but could be daunting if on your own.

Pen-y-Ghent makes up one the Yorkshire 3 peaks which, if you accept the challenge have to complete all 3 peaks and 24 miles within 12 hours. Most people start with this one (the smallest of the 3 ) from the nearby village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Green road near to Thornton Moor, Yorkshire This is Dodgson Lane. South of Dodgson Farm, it is a metalled lane joining the farm to the motor road, but north of the farm, as here, it is a 'green road', formerly used as a drove road for sheep and cattle. There has recently been some controversy about rights of way over such roads: it has been alleged that their use by motor cycles and quad bikes causes damage, and should not be allowed.
