Egmond aan Zee is the perfect place to unwind and spend a great holiday at the beach. It’s also close to towns such as Alkmaar and Bergen which are both perfect day trip destinations.
Egmond aan Zee has a long history. Fishermen settled on the coast as early as the 10th century. A village slowly established itself, parts of which have since been washed away by the sea. Today's promenade is actually where the centre of town used to be! Tourism picked up after the Second World War and Egmond aan Zee has since grown into a sizeable destination for holidays and day trips.
Relax at the beach or take a photo of the J.C.J van van Speijk lighthouse. Go for a long walk on the beach or explore it on horseback. If you venture far enough, you'll reach one of the neighbouring villages, such as Bergen aan Zee. The two seaside resorts are separated by the North Holland Dune Reserve, an expansive nature reserve with woods and dunes that is a great place to hike. Bergen and Alkmaar are also well worth a day trip. Sit at a sidewalk café in posh Bergen or climb to the top of the weigh house on Waagplein in Alkmaar.
Walk in the woods and the dunes, explore the beach on horseback, swim in the sea or explore the area by bicycle. There's more than enough to do in and around Egmond aan Zee! The village itself is compact, making it easy to explore on foot. Street parking is free in the off season.
Egmond aan Zee doesn't have a train station so you’ll have to take the bus. Take the train to Alkmaar and catch a bus to Egmond aan Zee. If you're travelling around the Netherlands by car and coming from the south, follow signs for Amsterdam and then the A9 towards Alkmaar. If you're coming from the northeast, take the Afsluitdijk.
Enjoy a great time with your partner or the whole family in beautiful Egmond aan Zee.
