Dover is home to one of the most significant ports in British history and the town’s rich seafaring heritage is captivatingly documented at the Dover Museum. The museum’s informative displays cover the history of the local area from the Stone Age to the Saxons and Romans. Immerse yourself in Dover’s heritage from medieval to modern times with six scale models of the town’s development through the ages, from its humble beginnings as a Stone Age farming community to its current form as one of the busiest ports in the world.

Visit the museum to find the oldest known seagoing boat on exhibition in the world. Discover the Bronze Age Boat, an archeological treasure believed to be 3,500 years old. This discovery of international archeological significance has helped historians learn more about ancient woodworking in northern Europe. Find out about prehistoric Dover with interactive screen displays, microscopes, archaeological artifacts and a comprehensive research library.

The museum is regularly updated with temporary displays that have multisensory exhibits. Educational events and lectures are held in conjunction with these exhibitions, as well as lots of interactive displays and projects to keep kids busy. Join the Dover Museum on one of its Family Days held frequently throughout the year. Entry is free for the whole family, and adults and children alike can get involved in fun activities aimed at learning about Dover’s rich history.

Dover Museum is open every day except winter Sundays and Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s days. Admission prices are affordable and offer great value for families, kids and seniors. 

The museum is centrally located in historic Market Square, just a few minutes’ walk from the Biggin Street shopping precinct and the Pencester Gardens. Catch one of Dover’s convenient local buses to the nearby Pencester Road bus stop or drive to the site and take advantage of nearby parking lots and street parking.
