This property is dirty and weathered. Room 3- smoke alarm has been removed. Tiles in bathroom flooring missing, window above shower cracked. Have to run water for 15 to 20 minutes for hot water to shower. Staff leaves prior to their end of trip. No cafe. They need to update their webpage.

Peeling paint everywhere, inside and out. It took several minutes to get any hot water, then it could suddenly get too hot. Nauseating stench of sewage in hallways and rooms. This was once a nice property that has been on hard times for a while. It should not continue to try to attract guests until it has been renovated, if that is financially feasible. Having foreign tourists end up here is embarrassing

This property is in great need of a major renovation. The plumbing is terrible - our sink was so slow to drain that we were afraid to even wash our faces because of overflow. The coffee machine in the common areas was broken. I could go on and on about all the things that need to be repaired. Overall, this was a very disappointing stay.

We arrived finding no cars in the parking lot and no sign the property was even open. Paint flaking off the exterior, damaged walkways, sandbags, and dirt parking lot gave the appearance of an abandoned property. Thinking I was in the wrong place, I called and was assured we were at the right place. We entered and were immediately struck by an unpleasant odor and more indications that the property was undergoing distress. Signs of prior, possibly recent flooding were evident. The clerk was very business like, notunpleasant but not pleasant either. Had we an alternative lodging we would have left. We didn't have high requirements for lodging since it was just the two of us guys on a trip where we would be spending no time other than sleeping at the hotel so we elected to stay; had our wives been with us,it would have been "Oh hell no". Our room was clean and the bed was decent. Through some magic the hallway odor was mitigated in the room thankfully. Furnishings were mismatched and appeared to have come from a thrift store. No television and we thought no internet but learned from another guest that there was wifi but soon discovered it didn't carry much bandwidth. We had been advised by the clerk that the hot water needed to run for 15 minutes before getting hot due to the age of the pipes. This turned out to be true and it was extremely difficult to balance the hot and cold. Doubt this facility could pass an inspection. Won't come back.

Historic property in less than good repair. Needs paint, has unpleasant odor, no dining at the property, closest restaurant 7 miles away. If repaired and painted, has much potential.

I was excited for the unique qualities of this hotel so did not mind at all the mis-matched furniture and interesting interior…. However they are clearly having facilities wide septic issues because the entire place including our rooms smelled like sewage. Additionally, I was nearly scalded by the shower because the water went from cold to boiling while taking a shower.

Very old and decaying property. The excuse for everything is that it's old. Like no hot water for a shower is because of old pipes. Well replace them! No tv, no cell service and sketchy wi-fi. Might as well sleep in your car.

It had no exterior maintenance and looked like it should have been abandoned. Unsafe locks to room and facility, Room was clean however it had a terrible odor and some of the tiles in the bathroom were falling off.

I love the opera house, and promise to become its benefactor if I ever win the lottery. I love the quiet quirkiness and the history. I don’t mind the no TVs and no frills approach, because I’m there to be inside Death Valley, not my room. Adjust your expectations, use their dining room to prepare your own simple meals, and appreciate this affordable gem close to the park! This is the only place I will stay when I come to Death Valley because it’s the only affordable CLOSE option! Thanks Amargosa Opera House - you are loved and appreciated!

The opera house may be worth a visit if you are in the area and it's raining too hard to do anything else (not a chance in Death Valley!). The hotel is to be avoided. Sleeping in your car is a better option! How can such a place be allowed to operate as a hotel? Frankly, it feels unsafe and smells unsanitary. Walls everywhere are peeling and falling apart. Carpets are old and dirty and were probably bought as such to complement the worse hotel furniture I have ever seen.The sewer smells in the corridors will choke you. The apparent pipes and missing tiles in the bathroom, well, better close your eyes! Don't bother waiting for warm water. The cracked walls and 'window treatment' in the room itself will give you nightmares if the clunky and noisy AC/heating wall unit hasn't kept you awake.. I didn't look but it felt like the mattresses were wrapped in plastic beneath the thin worn out sheets...We didn't dare open the closet! It was late when my husband and I got this place. Too late to go elsewhere. So, I drove around until I found a store that sold Lysol spray and hoped for the best! This is a tourist trap run by greedy owners. It's a disgrace to Death Valley. The young woman who works at that dump does her best as does the cleaning staff. They are not to blame.

Had rained so much we weren't allowed to view the opera house and water was so deep it was over our shoes so we were afraid of getting stuck. Manager said she was leaving at 8pm and to call if any trouble arose. I wasn't going to wade through the mud and water to bring our stuff in.

It's a love/hate experience with the Amargosa. The history of the place is fascinating and it definitely has not been renovated so you will get the real experience of what it has been like there for the last hundred years. They recently had a flood but it didn't affect the rooms. However, they weren't doing tours of the opera house which was our entire reason for staying here for 2 nights. It seemed to be accessible as we walked right up to the front doors on the walkway and peeked in the hole of the door and lights were on. Even though we asked at the front desk if we could have a look, the answer was no. So that was disappointing. The rooms are passable and ours had newer carpet with new beds with clean and new sheets. They were comfortable. The bathroom had a new toilet and sink but was otherwise a disaster - tiles missing, plaster peeling to the cement wall. I fear that if no work is done on this place soon it will fall into further disrepair. The art in the hallways is peeling too. Overall, cool place to stay for a night but not longer.

The stuff was very friendly. Regarding some issues mentioned in old comments, as of our stay the mat seems have been replaced and the hot water came out immediately. There is indeed a minor host spring-like smell in the building at the beginning though. Given the price and the location I consider it worth it.

A great place to stay.
An amazing historical building with comfy beds! Quiet and super close to Death Valley National Park. So much art and history and a lil library nook. 7 miles from a great diner. The staff are friendly and helpful and knowledgeable. We will definitely be stayi g again!

It was terrible that we couldn’t stay there. When we arrived it was completely locked and I was looking for around area to find a building that it was very very old and inhabitant. I had to leave there although I didn’t want to cancel. It was interesting that we are the ONLY guest at the hotel and it was not safe and very dirty so we left, but she charged us for one night around $106. Her excuse was you are going to cancel on 12/25 that it is late!!!!!!!! That area was not look like the picture in internet. I took a picture of that area if you need it to send you !

Definitely no-frills but very clean and a great experience mainly because of Marta Becket's legacy... a fascinating woman whose spirit is still very present here. Highly recommended to any creative person exploring the area and looking for something unusual and memorable.

The history and location were great. The room was clean and quiet. The smell of the hallways and lobby was horrible. The king size bed was really a queen. There was no hot water the first night but there was hot water the second night. Another guest had no hot water either the first night. The hallways and common area are not heated.
