The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (or Toy Train) is a 610mm narrow gauge railway that was built between 1879 and 1881. The 78km long steam train is still in operation today and many visitors take the UNESCO World Heritage train from Darjeeling to Ghum.
There are a number of parks and viewpoints in Darjeeling, including Nightingale Park/Shrubbery Park that sits around three kilometres from the railway station. Early risers should hike up to Tiger Hill to watch the sun set over the area and light up Mount Kanchenjunga. Observatory Hill is another great spot to get good views of the Himalayas.
Visitors interested in rare animals should visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, which is home to snow leopards, red panda and the critically endangered Himalayan wolf. The zoo also has breeding programmes to try to stop these rare animals becoming extinct.Restaurants and Bars
