Immersion in Traditional Cultural Lansdcape
The entire property of Kelly Place is a hands-on experience and learning ground in archaeology and cultural landscapes. The setting is quiet and peaceful so that visitors can truly reconnect with the land and indigenous traditions aside from our tumultous worlds. Breakfasts are gourmet - even under the virus rules ! My room had no AC; so it was very hot to sleep or concentrate on studies.

The area is beautiful and the rooms are fine to sleep in for a night. This would be a 4 star review BUT the staff is just so rude. I made a mistake when I made the reservations and didn’t put the right amount of people(there were 4 of us) and they said we had to pay more per person because of the breakfast. No big deal. Mistakes happen. But the staff just wouldn’t shut up about it. My family could all hear them talking about it in the kitchen. We felt very disrespected and belittled because of an honest mistake. Never staying here again.

This is a unique and beautiful property! It is a ways from town, but I knew this and did not mind the extra drive. The folks who own it are very nice and helpful. The breakfast was delicious too! My daughter and I had a great time exploring the property and going into the kivas. It was so cool! If you visit Mesa Verde, this property is a great follow up to understand and see first hand pueblos and kivas and how they were built. Thank you for sharing your wonderful property!

Very unusual. Didn’t know it was an educational facility for N M archeological activities. Was looking for something close to the four corners and this was one of the choices. Not really close as nothing is! The breakfast was very good.

The check in was OK but we were told there were beer and wine available by seeing the Host. When my wife asked for wine, she was told she could “order it off a menu” for $10/glass. The TV in the shared room didn’t work and it was hard to get a comfortable temp in the shower - it was either too hot or too cold. Also, it took about 10 tries to get the key to open our room door because the lock set was loose.

I tried to book a place near the four corners monument. This place was the only place that pooped up for my search. When I arrived at the location, it turned out to be 46 miles frim the monument. This so call place is in the middle of no where, made up of trailers and double wides. I was disappointed and worry about my family safety at night. Upon arrival, I did nit have the courage to check in and drove passed. I called to cancelled, but they refused to give the refund. Expedia, the site I booked the place from was willing to refund me $100 dollars. This place is not an ideal bed and breakfast place like others. Even if I had to lose hundreds of dollars to stay there or if I have to sleep in the car, I would not check in here.

The location is wonderful, great views, quiet and great activity opportunities nearby, including easy access to restaurants in Cortez. Breakfasts included were more than adequate. However, I downgraded my rating for unfriendly staff, including a quite rude reception by Mark.

Magical Oasis
I loved this place. Truly magical. The proprietors were delightful, helpful, funny, informative, and made great breakfasts. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking. There is a self-guided travel-through-local-history trail that takes you from Pueblo II sites including Kivas you can get into, up to European settlers. They have a display of historical artifacts found in the area in the main building. We sat on the deck and watched a storm come though with thunder and lightning, the warm summer wind blowing us about, watching deer run about nearby. We weren't aware of a lot nearby for dinner; we brought ours from the nearest town (Cortez) which had a some better than expected restaurants, before arrival. That's a 20 minute drive. We both thought we'd like to come back and stay longer next time, rather than the one night this trip. And we will be back.

Our stay was brief. We lasted an hour. My thinking was to try something new on our road trip. The room was clean and quaint. No AC, no WiFi in room and a ceiling fan that was about to fall off the ceiling were all things we could deal with. After all, we were open to something new. The GIANT black ants on the property and around the window above our bed in our room led to our departure. Office offered to spray for ants. In the end, we are not a rustic or rugged family. We observed others enjoying the property.

Or, you could have stayed in something other than the cheapest room! Thank you for letting me know about the ants outside your window. I sprayed for them and they were gone the next day. We want all critters to stay outside!

They are twelve miles out of town. She didn't tell us to eat first in town. Rooms are old. Bathroom so small you can barely move. Uses a swap cooler, no air.

Eating in town, or that we do not have a restaurant on site is in several of the emails and web sites if you read them. That is puzzling, if you called we always mention that. Yes this s an old house converted to bunk house style and those cowboys of years past didn't require much space to bathe in. Oh, by the way, it's called an evaporative cooler, not swap cooler? This sort of device works well in 10% humility like we have here.

Perhaps you should have considered a two or three night stay then? Why down rate us because you felt it was to far to stay for "a day". We agree too but do not control you. Heck, I drove over 30 miles each way for 20 years when working in San Diego, not a nice canyon drive like here!

I wish I had known
I wish I had actually read up on this B&B before we stayed. In my agenda, it was just a place to stay on our way to other things. Had a known there were artifacts on the land and all these great places to explore, I would've made an effort to get there earlier and stay awhile. As it was, we were there just long enough to spend the night, wolf down some breakfast and go. If you plan to stay, plan to spend some time there. It seemed like an amazing place to explore and the owners were SO nice. There was a very friendly peacock who we visited twice. (I've literally never typed those words before)

This is a nice place, with a cool story. We had trouble sleeping though as we could hear our neighbors as if they were in our room. It was also not easy to find because there were no signs and the hotel was a way up a rural road.

1 night stay
Beautiful location. The room we stayed in that was part of the main lodge was adjacent to two other rooms and you could hear and smell everything, and I mean everything. The couple next door must have been on a honeymoon or making up for lost time. If you have kids I would recommend a private casita or invest in a good pair of earplugs. Staff was friendly and the ancient ruin trails were interesting.

Take time to check out the tour and artifacts on site before or after your time at Mesa Verde. Next time we will spring for the day long guide with the Mountain Ute Tribe. Breakfast was great. Homemade granola along with steak and eggs one day and frittata the other.

Just...don't
No Wi-Fi, except on ONE computer in a separate building. Room is outdated, no food within 20 minute drive. In order to keep the room cool, you have to turn on the swamp cooler and open a window on the east (according to the directions ). However, if you open a window you're likely to get a new roommate, either the wasps outside your window or the ants that are large enough to carry you away. Go the extra 20 minute drive to the super 8.... It's a much better place to stay.

WiFi is in all buildings, varying signal level. Main lodge has plenty of area to relax and use WiFi. Rooms are a rustic ranch style, may seem outdated to the youth! Yes you must open a window to vent the excess air, but didn't you notice the screens to keep things out? Don't let this person influence your decision, read the other reviews for a more honest opinion.

Nicely out of the Way
Way out of the way - but in a good way. Nice little lodge well off the beaten path. Property has its own collection of Ancient Puebloan ruins. Our lodge room was tight for our group of 4, but the cubby holes on the wall were great for storage! Breakfast was nice, but they were always kind of running behind on keeping the buffet full. Overall, enjoyed our stay.

Site was lovely. Pleasantly surprised at the on-site archeological sites. And entrance to Canyon of the Ancients was really a thrill. Hotel owners are tired and should probably sell the place to some more energetic people. Food was OK but nothing as fabulous as I expected. Anyway, overall I would go back to this place with friends.

Retreat in the beautiful McElmo Canyon
This is a great little B&B. It's not fancy, but the rooms are comfortable and reasonably clean. Our room had a swamp cooler instead of A/C and it worked some of the time. It was fine because the area is so safe and remote that you can leave your windows open all night...or even all day, no problem. The atmosphere is very conducive to relaxing and enjoying nature. The privacy and access to hiking trails can't be beat. The property backs up to Canyon of the Ancients National Monument so hiking trails from the property take you into parts of the Monument most people don't get to see. They have Ancestral Pluebloan (Anasazi) ruins on the property that are in various stages of excavation/restoration. There is a restored kiva you are able to descend into. Across the arroyo, there is a small cliff dwelling. The owners are happy to share their knowledge of Native American history and culture. In fact they have programs most evenings on different topics, including natural history, Native American culture and tradition, and more. They serve a full hot breakfast buffet style. It was very good. (Eggs, whole grain pancakes, French toast, bacon, cold cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt) The home made granola is excellent and available for purchase should you decide to bring some home or take out on the trail.

This place is at least 20 miles from anywhere near a town. It is an archeological preserve, and it's not a "hotel." To some people it may be outstanding, but making a closet into a bathroom is not my idea of comfort. The toilets are tiny, they have wifi, but if this is your thing then it is your place.

Peace and adventure at Kelly Place
We loved our stay at Kelly Place. A peaceful, beautiful oasis in the desert, with ruins right on the grounds and easy hiking into Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Take the trails that lead right from the B & B or take a short drive (less than 5 minutes) to Sand Canyon. Great breakfast and the staff are friendly and full of information about the local ruins, hiking trails, and other attractions. We are already looking forward to a return visit!

The B&B off the map
We left Albuquerque New Mexico kind of late so the drive in was in the dark. Took what seemed to be a long windy road of the the beaten path to a one mile gravel road where we crossed a bridge to reach our destination. We unpacked to a cabin like setting with bunch beds for my kids and lall slept comfortably. Upon awakening we made it to the lodge for breakfast where not only a decent meal was being prepared but also nice company in the other gusts. After breakfast we explored the grounds. With the rich history and evidence of wild life my family fell in love. Having to leave for other planned adventures in AZ my on the regret is not a loosing more time to observe and partake in all that is offered. I recommendation is don’t try to cram it in just a day. At least spend the weekend.
