The grounds were beautiful. Great community area (use of the kitchen too!) and pool. The owner was wonderful and very helpful. Right across from the ocean. If you go during the hottest months, be aware that the cabins have 3 mesh walls. We did not find this as a problem since there were 2 fans and quite comfortable in the evenings. Really, who spends too much time in their room on vacation anyway. That aside, the cabins are quite comfortable and have nice decks with hammocks.
Blue Jay Lodge provided us with the Costa Rican accommodations we were looking for. We absolutely loved the cabanas and the staff was wonderful and so helpful; helping us make arrangements for Isla de Tortuga and restaurant choices (Amici has outstanding wood fired pizza). The pool was always clean as was the common area. Being removed from the road a few hundred meters and a kilometer or so from the town, the only sounds were birds and wildlife; the quiet was a nice reprieve from the ‘action’ in Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa. My daughter saw monkeys from her bed and lots of iguanas on the property. The fans in the room were all we needed and we were quite comfortable. The cabanas have an ‘open air’ feeling to them and the netting was sufficient to keep any bugs out. If we return to this area we would definitely stay here again!
I read all the reviews and this hotel was beautiful and for the most part the reviews were accurate with a very big BUT....the cabinas have no walls just kind of like a netting that does not keep bugs out. The experience was much like camping only I would have felt more protected from the elements in a tent to be honest. It rained hard and the roof leaked in 2 places. Our feet were bright orange, I assume from the floor being wet and stain rubbing off. My girls could not sleep because of the bugs and we literally had beetles an inch long flying into our beds. We paid for 2 nights but stayed in a different hotel the second night and came back to check out the next day. I didn’t complain and don’t intend to. It was just so miserable I want people to be fully informed before they stay here. They also don’t tell you that you need a credit card with the bumpy numbers because the only way they have to charge you is the manual thing that takes an imprint of the card unless you plan to pay cash then that won’t be a problem. On a positive note, the place is amazingly beautiful. Like the other reviews indicate you feel like you are staying in a treehouse in the middle of a jungle with sounds of the ocean nearby, howler monkeys, and birds. Having said that, all the creatures are LOUD!!!! If you like beauty, nature, roughing it and don’t mind leaks in the roof, loud creatures, or sharing your bed with bugs this is totally the place for you.
So good; David and his family are the best, so helpful and authentic. Ask them if you need anything! They have a beautiful place, very clean anything but a normal hotel!
We were looking for a relaxing get away. We found that and more at Blue Jay Lodge in Mal Pias! The bungalows are quaint, and have a tropical theme. We were among the jungle
soinds at all times. It was like being on top of a canopy tour! The view of the beach and surrounding area from room #7 “The Iguana” was amazing!! Although, the walk up the steps is not for the faint hearted.... it was very doable for my husband and I (I took a short break)
Being a bit out of town was nice, as we did not have any noise (other than the birds & monkeys) and walking to the beach was a nice way to get in a little exercise.
Breakfast at the lodge was good, typical Tico breakfast, amazingly fresh fruit and mediocre coffee (the only thing I would improve on)
The towns of Mal Pias & Santa Teresa are must sees.... a few of our favorite restaurants were The Roastery (for fantastic coffee) The Bakery (everything was delicious) Amici (to die for pizza) and Las Piedras (for meat lovers) for lunch Las Caracolas was a nice stop on the beach for nachos & beer.
We had a fabulous time in Costa Rica and will be back to the Blue Jay Lodge for sure!
This was our first stay at the Blue Jay. It was recommended by a friend. We stayed in a bungalow that was higher up in the hill. It was a bit of an uphill walk but we are in good shape and managed it. The bungalow is a cottage type structure without a kitchen. The views from our double hammock balcony were fantastic. We were above the trees. We were able to see most of Playa Malpais, Playa Carmen and Playa St. Theresa from our balcony. The sound of the ocean at night was also very hypnotic and helped us fall asleep. If you like wildlife you will enjoy the stay. We experienced a fair amount of wildlife in the area and from our balcony. The breakfast is a typical Costa Rican breakfast... eggs, rice and beans, fresh fruit and great coffee. The young dude at breakfast was great... our Spanish is not great but we managed.... nice young man.
To be short and sweet this place is sweet. You get your own tree house bungalow with everything you need. It's not fancy but worth the experience. It's very clean and everyday they clean your room. The husband and wife that run the place make you feel like family and will do anything to help you. We rented ATV and the guy brought them right to us while we were having breakfast. They call when we needed a taxi and help me call and book a flight when I was having trouble doing it online. Definately rent ATV and go to Montezuma! Cool town and everyone is so sweet and friendly!
Plesently surprised. Our hostess is a bilingual warm woman that was most helpful. She upgraded our bungalow to another room with a kitchen. Very clean and nice. We walked to a beautiful beach, short drive to go surfing good restaurants and shopping close by as well
Pura Vida
WOW! What an incredible place to stay. Our bungalow had ocean views. We were nestled above the trees overlooking Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa. We had birds eyes view of the sunset and were one with the iguanas sitting in trees. I would highly recommend for any one who is really looking to get away from the modern world and experience Pura Vida!
I booked one night coming from Montezuma. Everything seems so far away according to maps and such online, but this lodge is only a 15 minute slow walk into Santa Teresa or a $2 taxi. I booked on Expedia after confirming my shuttle from Montezuma. I was greeted by name at reception and Luiz brought my bag up to my bungalow. I planned on one night only, but felt so at peace here that I booked a second night. Guests are surrounded by nature here: monkeys, birds, lizards, butterflies. The view from my bungalow was so perfect that I chose to watch the sun set from my balcony. The fans provided much needed air circulation, but my bungalow cooled down a bit in the middle of the night - perfect sleeping conditions. Guests get a few choices of plates for breakfast - the typical breakfast was perfect for me (rice/beans, eggs, tomatoes, cheese, fruit, toast, coffee, and juice.
Staff is amazing! Can't wait to return! Lots of steps though so you will be getting your daily workout for sure. Not recommended if you're out of shape.
We reserved this hotel without too much expectations. It was supposed to be a place to put ourselves to sleep in the very first night, but we ended up extending our stay. The hotel was located in a gorgeous location within woods, with a wonderful ocean views. We happen to wake up early one morning only to watch a small group of capuchin monkeys having their breakfast less than a hundred feet away from us. One evening we went our room to change clothes after a day of swimming, and spend an extra half hour watching sunset from our hammocks. The owner lady (who was a fan of Turkish soap operas) was exceptionally nice to us, and helped with everything from renting bikes to directing us to the best lunch location in Mal Pais (Which is about 10 minutes walking distance from the hotel). The Costa Rican breakfast was also very authentic. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends who would want to visit Mal Pais.
This is a great place to stay where you get much more than what you paied for. The cabins are cozy, clean and charming and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It's close to the beach and the village.
