• Air travel can be easy if you carry the right stuff. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a clean set of clothes and a few magazines. Secondly, leave space in your hand luggage for your electronic gadgets, chargers, your medications and perhaps a cosy neck pillow as well. Lastly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel documents and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) lurking in your hand luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive substances, like aerosols and matches, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your goal here is to feel as comfortable as you can. Choose a pair of slip-on shoes, dress in loose, breathable clothing and don't forget to bring a pullover in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of sitting. To lessen your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

Being prepared before your flight will make your getaway to Narragansett easy and painless. We've rounded up some handy tips for a stress-free journey past security:

• Airport security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid passport and matching boarding pass before you're allowed to proceed any further. Have them ready to show.
• After that, both you and your carry-on luggage must be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that might trigger the alarms. Personal belongings like your belt, coat and earphones need to go through the machine.
• Electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go through the machine for inspection. No need to worry though, you'll be back online in no time.
• Any gels or liquids, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), zip-lock bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Safety boots and other heavy shoes are often subjected to additional screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board.
