Cerro de Las Campanas National Park

Escape the city bustle, relax on tree-shaded lawns and learn about important historical events at this pretty hilltop park.

History and nature combine at Cerro de las Campanas National Park (Parque Nacional Cerro de las Campanas) to create a symbolic city retreat. The park sits atop a hill on the outskirts of Querétaro’s city center. Find well-kept gardens, a city museum and monuments to significant military events and leaders. Cerro de las Campanas National Park takes its name from a set of stones, which are said to sound like bells when hit.

Look for a plaque at the base of the hill. It marks the spot where emperor Maximilian of Habsburg surrendered to the Mexican general Mariano Escobedo in 1867. This brought an end to 5 years of French intervention. Maximilian, along with his two counterparts, was then tried and sentenced to death by firing squad. Climb the staircase to the quaint pink-colored chapel to see a cross that honors Maximilian. The cross is made from the wood of a boat that he sailed to Mexico.

Get an insight into the life of the people of Querétaro at the Magic of the Past Museum. Interactive exhibits chronologically highlight Querétaro’s heritage from its ancient beginnings through to the 20th century. Multimedia galleries, puzzles and the chance to dress up in traditional customs make the museum enjoyable for all ages.

At the highest point of the park is a circular terrace encircled by a decorative stone balustrade. A 43-feet (13-meter) tall statue of the 19th-century president Benito Juárez overlooks the terrace.

On hot days, the park provides a welcome respite from the muggy city streets. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the grassy lawns or read a book beneath the shade of a tree. Spend some time admiring the meticulously groomed hedges and flowerbeds. Strike the mystical stones and listen carefully for the bell-like sounds.

The park sits to the west of Querétaro’s city center. It’s about a 15-minute drive and 30-minute walk from Plaza de Armas.

Cerro de las Campanas National Park is open daily, from dawn until dusk. The Magic of the Past Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and there’s an admission fee. Guided tours of the museum are available upon request.
