Colorful prints, British paintings and South Asian crafts complement a David Hockney collection in this Baroque mansion. Bring your kids to the playground and lake.

In the heart of leafy grounds, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery showcases exquisite collections of art, with a focus on works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its strength lies in its homage to the life and work of Bradford-born pop-art master David Hockney.

In the permanent collection, browse sculptures and paintings by major British artists from the 1800s and 1900s. South Asian arts and crafts add range to the collection. Learn about David Hockney’s early life in Bradford as you study his works.

Admire the range of traveling exhibitions. These temporary shows tend to stay here for 6 to 12 months. Shows have covered such themes as a circus installation and a modern history of Bradford painters.

The hall has been collecting artistic prints for more than a century. Check out the prints of modernist works by Francisco Goya and William Blake next to dazzling pop-art prints from the minds of Andy Warhol and Richard Hamilton.

Relax in the resplendent Family Room, where you can put together a picnic and get water. The museum gift shop displays toys, books and many souvenirs relating to David Hockney.

Venture into the green surroundings of Lister Park and enjoy snacks and hot beverages in the boathouse. Watch your kids enjoying the adventure playground and boating lake. Take photos of the stone canals in the Mughal Gardens, with a backdrop of Cartwright Hall.

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery lies in Lister Park, a little north of the city center. Get a bus from Bradford Interchange and head north for 10 minutes to reach the park. From here, walk northwest for a few minutes to the gallery. Admission is free for the gallery, which opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon.

Nearby sights include Lister Mills, Bradford City Football Club and Oastler Shopping Centre and Market.
