A chance to take a look behind the scenes at a traditional Belgian brewery and sample local beer made to an age-old recipe.

The Cantillon Brewery is probably the best-known brewery in Brussels. It has made a name for itself as a traditional business making tasty brews the local way. The brewery has been operating since 1900 and is currently run by a fourth-generation brewer who is upholding the tradition rather successfully.

Belgium is historically famous for its beers and, at the Cantillon, only the most traditional methods are used. Their speciality is what is known as “lambic” beer, in which conditions are created for wild yeasts and bacteria to occur naturally. The result is a fine tipple which is both unique to the region and famous far beyond its borders.

At Cantillon, little has changed in over 100 years of brewing. The techniques and machinery have remained the same, with the only slight change a shift in favour of using organic ingredients. Once at the brewery, you’re free to wander around as you please with only a pamphlet for your guide. There are no restricted areas so you’ll be able to observe every stage of the process. Guided tours are available, but these must be arranged prior to your visit.

The amazing array of old equipment here is a draw in itself, as are the delicious malty, wholesome aromas that pervade the entire complex. These prepare you well for the complimentary beer at the end of your visit. The only problem you’ll have at this stage is choosing just one from the wide range on offer. The sour Kriek beer, brewed with cherries, is always a reliably delicious choice. And don't forget, you can always visit the shop and take away some other varieties to try in your own time.

Cantillon Brewery is on Rue Gheude, just outside the centre of Brussels. There is parking available on the streets nearby, or you can take the metro. The brewery is closed on Sundays and public holidays and you’ll be charged a small entry fee.
