Best known as the birthplace of Lego, this crafty Danish town also offers a safari park, Scandinavia's largest water park, and the chance to taste Viking’s mead.

A small town in the centre of Jutland, Billund is renowned for its Lego factory and Legoland theme park. Its local craftspeople, however, who proudly practice traditional arts and brewing techniques show there’s much more to Billund than just its world famous coloured blocks.

The original Lego toy factory was built in Billund in the 1930s, but was burnt down during German occupation in WWII. Luckily it was soon rebuilt, and now manufactures most of the world’s supply of Lego. Next door to the factory is Legoland Park, Billund’s biggest attraction. Jump on a roller-coaster, visit the incredible mini town depicting the rolling hills and historic houses of Denmark, and walk through a tunnel of marine creatures in Lego Atlantis. You can even stay overnight at the Legoland hotel.

The entertainment continues at Lalandia, a resort featuring Nordic styled cabins where you can try everything from heated waterslides, indoor rock climbing and skiing, ice skating and archery. Those interested in gentler pursuits can learn the finer points of gem mining and boiled sweet making.

At Billund’s brewery, Dansk Mjød, you can try Danish Mead known as Viking’s Blood, made from honey to a recipe from the 1700s. The brewery also produces beers, mustard, spirits and jam made from a local berry. Traditional Danish weaving and dying techniques are kept alive at the House of Ølholm, where you can find woven silk scarves in incredible colours. For more inspiring arts, visit the Skulpturpark Billund, a walk through garden landscape featuring traditional and modern sculptures crafted from bronze, ceramic, granite, iron and steel.

The town’s location makes it perfect for exploring the many historic locations and attractions in this part of Jutland. Hire a car and enjoy picturesque day trips. The area is full of old churches, some dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries, as well as several museums documenting the culture and times of this area. Drive out to discover Viking history at Jelling, then head on to nearby Vejle, just 19 miles (30 kilometres) from Billund. Vejle is known for its shopping districts and upmarket restaurants where you can sample traditional Danish fish dishes.

Lego House excellent. Llandia good for young children. Shame legoland is seasonal opening only, otherwise little else to do in Billund during the winter.

5/5 - Excellent

Billund is first and foremost a Lego town, however the whole town is clean and people are friendly and welcoming so you find yourself exploring beyond the Lego. There are plenty of lovely little shops to discover and coffee shops to die for.

Billund is a small and quiet town based around Lego, you can take a nice walk to/or from the centre via the Sculpture park

5/5 - Excellent

Billund is a small city with enough character to match. Every place of interest when travelling with children was within 30mins walking distance but there is also a free shuttle bus that comes very hour. Lego is the heart of Billund.

Legoland is 10x better than the UK version. The longest queue all day was 45 minutes and that came down. Brilliantly thought out. Make sure you take down a taxi number for local taxis from the airport to book as they are not there waiting for you

I loved it and would go again!
