A small island, with a big heart. Just a short boat ride northwest of Viti Levu and part of the Mamanuca island chain, this small island has only one resort and is aimed mostly at young travellers who are looking for a no frills, no fuss, maximum fun experience. Visitors will have three meals a day laid on for them and all the freedom they need to have a great time.
Start off your day by watching life beneath the surrounding crystal blue waters. Snorkelling off any part of the island is a beautiful way to start the day. Grab your snorkel and wade into the water to discover a colourful garden of corals and fish. Venture to the outer reefs on the resort’s dive boat tour for a chance to swim with reef sharks and rays. The resort’s qualified instructors will know the best spots around.
If it’s excitement you’re after, you can Jet-Ski, wakeboard or parasail high above this tiny island. For a more chilled experience, grab a friend and head off into the inviting blue waters on a sea kayak. Whatever takes your mood, the resort has plenty of equipment and staff on hand to help you.
You’ll never get the chance to be bored here. Other fun things to do include coconut tree climbing or learning to cook Fijian style. There’s plenty of cold beer on tap to keep you cool after an energetic game of beach volleyball, or a round on the mini-golf course. You can also get a chance to feed the turtles.
You can walk around the whole island comfortably and a stroll in the setting sun is a breath-taking end to the day. Once the sun goes down, the beach becomes a stage for a whole host of entertainment, from live music and dancing to traditional fire twirlers. There’s a well-stocked, barefoot beach bar keeps the drinks flowing well into the early hours.
Beachcomber Island is a party haven for budget travellers. It attracts a young crowd and gets very busy during high season between June and October. You can stay in ocean-front ‘bures’ (wood and straw huts) or dorms. Beachcomber Island is easy to get to and is only a short ferry ride from Port Denarau.
