A low tide #Adventure over the Bar Harbor Sand Bridge

The Bar Harbor Land Bridge appears only at low tide, giving adventurers just a few hours to explore Acadia National Park's Bar Island Trail. We were careful to keep track of our timing and watch the tides, so as not to inadvertently spend a night stranded on the other side of the harbor.

This sand bar between Bar Harbor and Bar Island is only above water for 90 minutes before and after low tide. A nice short hike on the island, but get back in time or you're stuck on the island.

The Criterion in downtown Bar Harbor, Maine, does not look very much from the exterior, but it is a glorious, well-preserved Art Deco style theatre. Opening in 1932, it has served the town of Bar Harbor as a movie palace ever since, accomodating such prominent families as the Rockefellers on their vacations to nearby Mount Desert Island.

Kept in fantastic condition over the years, the theatre still has most of its original interior: seats, curtains, and even the original lighting board for stage performances.
