Balmedie Country Park

Balmedie Country Park showing a sandy beach
A mile of boardwalks leads through rolling dunes, marram-grass ridges, sandy beaches and wetland areas at this expansive seaside parkland.

Explore the scenic seaside landscapes and sweeping beaches of Balmedie Country Park, a large protected dune system that spans Aberdeen’s coast. Stretching 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) from Aberdeen to just beyond Ythan estuary, this stunning dune system offers a breathtaking sweep of coastal views, as well as a captivating insight into the area’s delicate ecosystems and vegetation. Stroll along the network of boardwalks that open up this magnificently rugged landscape and enjoy a pretty seaside picnic.

Begin your visit to Balmedie Country Park at the reserve’s information board. You can learn about the area’s interesting flora and fauna, as well as the structure of the delicate dunes. Spot the different species of vegetation that help to hold the dunes’ form, including marram grass. You’ll also find picnic tables and a children’s play area here. Lay out a picnic lunch on the tables and enjoy scenic views across the dunes and out to the North Sea while the kids explore the playground.

Discover the park’s diverse landscapes on the easy 1-mile (1.7-kilometer) boardwalk trail. The trail leads past grassy ridges and rolling dunes, hopping over ribbons of marshland and lushly vegetated waterways that open up into the ocean. Stroll onto the wide expanse of sandy beach and explore the coastline. You’ll see a collection of concrete fortifications that were built during World War II as a defense against invasion. Sit on the beach and watch the waves crashing onto the shore and spot seabirds circling overhead. You might see locals riding horses along the shoreline. Take a dip in the beautifully remote waters, but take care, as lifeguards do not patrol the beach. A second boardwalk leads inland from the beach in a loop and returns to the main picnic areas.

Balmedie Country Park is well equipped with picnic tables, toilet facilities and car parking on its northern and southern access points. Parking is available for a donation. It is approximately a 25-minute drive north from Aberdeen via a pretty coastal road. The park is free to visit and accessible during daylight hours.
