Avignon City Centre

Avignon City Centre invites you into a medieval wonderland surrounded by 14th-century ramparts. The UNESCO-listed Papal Palace dominates the skyline while cobblestone streets lead to charming squares filled with café terraces. Wander car-free lanes past Gothic churches and hidden courtyards in this historic French treasure. The famous Avignon Festival transforms the city each July with theatrical performances. Art lovers will appreciate the Collection Lambert and Musée du Petit Palais housing centuries of papal heritage. From the partial Pont d'Avignon stretching across the Rhône to the panoramic views from Rocher des Doms park, history breathes through every stone.

Nord Rocade

This residential area on Avignon's northern ring road offers travellers an authentic slice of everyday French suburban life. Families thrive in this quieter district where local boulangeries fill morning air with fresh bread aromas. Budget-conscious visitors appreciate the lower accommodation rates compared to the historic centre. The area serves as an ideal gateway to central Avignon's treasures. Regular bus routes connect to the city centre while the ring road position makes exploring Provence simple. Basic shops and family-run bistros with traditional Provençal cuisine cater primarily to locals rather than tourists.

Barthelasse

Escape the urban bustle on Barthelasse, France's largest river island nestled in the Rhône. This peaceful green haven offers spectacular views of medieval Avignon's skyline just a short walk across the bridge. Walking paths along the water reveal picture-perfect scenes of the famous Pont d'Avignon. The island charms visitors with its authentic countryside character and traditional French farmhouses. Cyclists love the flat, car-free paths winding through organic farms and shaded lanes. Local farm stands sell fresh Provençal produce while a handful of charming bistros serve regional cuisine with garden views.

Quartier Ouest

While Quartier Ouest isn't home to many top sights, Avignon Festival and Rue de la Republique are some notable places to visit nearby.

Montfavet

Experience authentic Provençal life in Montfavet, a peaceful residential area on the outskirts of Avignon. The area revolves around the historic Église Saint-Pierre, surrounded by cypress trees and traditional stone houses with terracotta roofs. Locals celebrate their agricultural heritage with festivals like the Cherry Festival. Parc de la Cantonne offers tree-lined paths perfect for relaxing walks away from tourist crowds. Family-run bistros serve traditional dishes made with fresh local ingredients. The countryside setting provides vineyard walks and orchard visits while still allowing easy access to Avignon's attractions.

"This is a great choice for visiting Avignon. It is right across from the walled city and it’s super easy to walk to restaurants, coffee and the main sites. It’s on a main road but the hotel is quiet. It’s a modern hotel with great amenities - the pool and bar are cute, the restaurant is good (Cesar salad with chicken was nice), and the rooms are clean. The air conditioning works well - it’s up to American standards, which is great when it’s hot. Incredibly helpful staff! We had a few issues in Avignon and they were so helpful and kind with things like helping us place local calls and change reservations, a very late check out, etc. Great English skills but they will let you practice your French if you want. Honestly, you won’t regret choosing this."
