Water Starwort in the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal The clear water of the disused section of the canal contains large quantities of waterweed – but normally it is difficult to photograph because of reflections. This shot has been taken under Wellonhead Bridge to reduce the reflections, allowing the weed to be seen more clearly.

A Mowed Strip across a Giant Lawn The view over this old farm gate beside the towpath was a surprise. One gets used to seeing fields laid out as pasture but this is different. The way the grass has been mown, the uniform quality, and the apparent absence of weeds gives it the appearance of a well maintained garden lawn, perhaps associated with one of the houses on Stablebridge Road. A month later the grass had grown and there were buttercups and daisies, but apart from a few stems of cow parsley there was no sign of any rank weeds.
