Strike out on an eventful city trip to medieval Arnsberg, the former capital of the Duchy of Westphalia and gateway to the Sauerland, the Land of the Thousand Hills.
On your mini-break to Arnsberg, you will find the romance of timber frames in the Old Town of a municipality first mentioned in 789, as well as the idyllic nature of the High Sauerland and the Arnsberger Wald Nature Park, one of the largest continuous areas of woodland in Germany.
The city, lying in the Ruhr Valley, is made up of around fifteen picturesque town quarters and villages. You will find many tourist attractions, such as the castle ruins and the bell tower, on your city trip to the Arnsberg district. Rummage in the Old Town's little shops or give yourself a culinary spoiling in the cosy cafés and restaurants. The market square in Neheim, the most populous town quarter, is captivating, with the Neheimer Dom (Neheim Cathedral) and the pedestrian zones with many shops and boutiques. The Herdringen district is characterised by the 19th-century Herdringer Schloss (Herdringen Castle) and the romantic castle park. The view of the Vosswinkel town quarter is most particularly defined by the idyllic Wasserschloss Höllinghofen (a castle with a moat), and the baroque Church of St. Urbanus.
While on your city trip to Arnsberg, you shouldn't miss out on a ramble through the Vosswinkel Forest, the heart of the Lüerwald conservation area. Observe the secret animal world along the 12 km-long walking network through the original landscape, with its thickets, alder swamps, and old trees. In addition to the particularly numerous animal sightings, 60 types of bird, rare fish and toads count among the inhabitants of these peaceful surroundings. The forest also offers a sports challenge through its natural climbing park with a total of 7 obstacle courses.
The Sauerland Museum is found in the historical Landsberger Hof building. You can pick up many interesting facts about the region's history in the museum's permanent exhibition. Displays include exhibits from the time of the Duchy of Westphalia, alongside fossils from the Balver Caves and the skeleton of a cave bear. Relax and finish off your visit in the cosy museum café.
Friends of the game of golf should definitely include a day trip to the Golfclub Sauerland during their travels. The club, founded in 1958, is in the vicinity of Herdringen Castle, in the middle of beautiful countryside. Once you've completed the course's 10 holes, you can allow yourself a culinary treat in the clubhouse.
A singular experience is a short trip to Schloss Arnsberg, probably built around the year 1100. The ruins on the 256 m high Schlossberg are those of the Renaissance castle destroyed in 1762 during the Seven Years War.
