Hike with your family along a pleasant coastal path to find an immense rock arch resembling a cathedral portal and rose window.

Arch Rock, also known as Cathedral Rock, is a beachfront rock formation with a couple of intriguing openings. It is along part of a scenic trail in Keurboomstrand. Ocean waves lap the base of this natural phenomenon, which is said to have once held spiritual significance to indigenous people. Capture photos of the picturesque arch and the smaller hole above it that resembles a cathedral’s rose window.

Admire the natural decorations of plants and flowers hanging from the rocks above. Stand inside the rock opening to pose for photos and appreciate its sheer vastness. Watch the changing hues of the sky through the arch at sunset. The beach path to the arch is simple at low tide, while an elevated trail through coastal vegetation takes you there at high tide.

Spot small pods of dolphins occasionally breaking free from the waves in the ocean. Enjoy the views of the Robberg Peninsula and Plettenberg Bay communities, whose lights illuminate the shoreline at night.

Bring supplies to have a picnic with your friends and family, with the arch serving as a scenic backdrop. Cool off in the charming rock pool beside the arch.

Lifeguards patrol the main beach itself in summer, when it is considered safer for families to swim. Make use of the showers, restaurants and other facilities near the parking lot.

The site’s official name is Cathedral Rock. It is said the arch was used as a sacred site by indigenous people thousands of years ago. Contemplate the potential importance of the rock’s shape to these groups, possibly symbolizing birth.

Climb up to the Matjes River Rock Shelter for excellent views of the coastline. Learn about its archeological significance and the skeletons from thousands of years ago found here.

Arch Rock is in the Annex Arch Rock Private Nature Reserve about 4 miles (6 kilometers) east of central Keurboomstrand. Walk east for 30 minutes from the main beach’s parking lot to reach the rock formation, which is next to the Matjes River. Nearby attractions include the Birds of Eden sanctuary, the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary and the Elephant Sanctuary.
