Almendralejo

Almendralejo, capital of the Tierra de Barros county, is well known as a cava-producing region and the city of Romanticism: a destination with everything you need for a dream vacation.

Take in the wonders of Romanticism during your holidays in Almendralejo in Plaza de Espronceda, a beautiful square surrounded by a low wall of red hydraulic tiles. In one corner stands a monument to one of Almendralejo’s most illustrious former inhabitants: the great Spanish Romanticist poet José de Espronceda. Opposite that monument, you’ll find another monument, dedicated to writer Carolina Coronado, also from the town.

If you’d like to learn more about the romantic past of the city, you can visit Santa Clara park. Against the backdrop of a lush oasis lies Monsalud Palace, the birthplace of José de Espronceda. The building, built in 1752, has been completely renovated and is now the Town Hall. Inside you can enjoy a beautiful central courtyard with arches supported by columns of pink granite.

Within walking distance of Plaza de Espronceda is a church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Purificación. This Gothic temple, built in the 15th century, preserves an impressive altarpiece and spectacular murals by Italian artists. The sanctuary known as the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad is also worth a visit, with three Baroque altarpieces of great artistic interest. There is also a chapel in the beautiful gardens of Parque de la Piedad.

Next to the sanctuary is the Museo Devocional, a museum with pieces donated by the Church, neighbours and visiting devotees. You’ll find objects of remarkable religious value, such as sacramental books from the 16th to the 19th century, gold pieces from the 16th to the 20th century, paintings from the 18th to the 20th century and vestments used to dress the town’s patron saint. If you find a cheap trip to Almendralejo, you’ll definitely want to visit the museum.

If you plan to book one of our package deals to Almendralejo, we recommend you check the dates of the yearly festivals celebrated in the town. One example is the Fiesta de la Vendimia, the festival to celebrate the grape harvest, which is an excellent opportunity to taste the region’s wines and cavas.
