Ålesund is ideally located on the coast of Sunnmøre. In 2007, it was voted Norway's most beautiful town by the country's inhabitants, and is renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture.
The fjord landscape in Ålesund is truly spectacular, and it's included on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites – which says something. The UNESCO committee justified their decision by saying that the fjord landscape had to be one of the most beautiful things the planet has to offer, so it may not come as a surprise that many people choose to travel to Ålesund! The town's architecture is completely unique, which can in large part be explained by the fact that the town had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1904. So take a walk around the town centre and admire the gorgeous Art Nouveau houses.
There's also a lot of exciting things to do when you're on holiday in Ålesund. Getting out in nature is the main attraction, so come along on an organised trip to the stunning Geirangerfjord, which is only a few hours from Ålesund. Take the trip up to Fjellstua to get a full overview of the area. This is a restaurant at the top of a mountain in Ålesund, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and fjord. Fjellstua has a dedicated viewpoint, so it's not necessary to visit the restaurant if you'd rather just get some fresh air.
If you're planning to shop during your weekend trip to Ålesund, Kongens gate, a pedestrian street, is a good starting point. Like everything else in Ålesund, it is truly beautiful. If you are looking for crafts, art and fashion, Kipervika is the spot for you. It's a great place to buy souvenirs for your friends and family.
Also visit Atlanterhavsparken (the Atlantic Ocean Park) during your stay - it’s one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Northern Europe. The aquarium is approximately three kilometres outside Ålesund, in Tueneset by Skarbøvika.
