Terrible hotel, great staff.
Terrible first night in tiny single room in the Manor, couldn't control heating, room far too hot, open windows couldn't be secured so rattled all night. Squeaky, bouncy bed. 'Private bathroom' actually separate from room so had to lock room (lock impossible to understand), take massive bathroom key and towells to bathroom, which was very uninviting, lock up and unlock again. Didn't appreciate label on shower dispenser saying Do Not Remove, or one above taps saying Hot Water - ??? Felt like an institution. Although almost empty, all people staying were housed next to each other in the Manor, so when some of them decided to have a party we all had to suffer. The walls are very thin, and my bed actually shook when neighbours stomped about. Breakfast was what you'd expect from a 3 star place, but coffee was undrinkable. Only allowed to use 2 of the tables; again, unfriendly and institutional. I had such a bad night that I decided to leave rather than complete my stay, but happily for me met the head of housekeeping on my way out (whoever was supposed to actually be in charge had not arrived), and she was brilliant. She persuaded me to look at a much better room, in the barn, where there was no one else booked in next to me, and I had a huge (though still pretty institutional) bathroom, the heating could be turned off and the windows opened, and the bed was good. So glad I didn't have to look for another place to stay, and slept much better. Thank you Lisa!

Good morning Anonymous. Thank-you for taking the time to leave feedback we really appreciate receiving all feedback from our guests about our residential Conference Centre!. The single room with private bathroom you booked is the only one we have which has detached shower room at the cheaper rate located in the 1268 Manor house. We had plenty of en-suite rooms available at the time you booked, so its a shame that as the private bathroom was a issue for you why you didn't book an en-suite room. The heating can be controlled by yourself by pushing the blue (for colder) red (for hotter) buttons on the radiator valve, there is a little sign explaining how to do this next to the radiator. Talking of signage, we understand your frustration regarding the signage in the shower room stating hot water, health and safety dictates that we have a sign for this unfortunately, and the sign asking guests not to remove the shower dispenser is because to many times this has been removed and it costs our charity money to keep replacing them, money which would rather spend on improving guests services. On your point about all guests being located in the Manor House when the conference centre (not a hotel) was quiet, we understand where you are coming from and ideally we wouldn't of wanted this, however, we are dictated by the room types guests book, just so happens on this occasion the triple room is next to the single room with private shower room and the double room is above the triple and single with private shower room. We only have one each of these room types which is why you were all located together. We are sorry that the guests next door to you decided to have a party, as you'' appreciate it's not something we can control, however, it's a pity that you didn't ring the emergency contact number which you were given at the time of arrival we would of happily dealt with the issue there and then. Glad you decided to stay another night after you saw Lisa when she arrived at 08:15, she is fantastic and we will pass on your kind words to her. The office opens from 09:00 -20:00 arrive in time for our shifts to cover these hours.The room that Lisa upgraded you to is our twin accessible family room, really pleased to hear you had a good night sleep and enjoyed the much larger room with seating area. Maybe moving forward this is the room type you should be looking to book when staying in a conference centre or a hotel if you choose to book a hotel instead. Charney Manor
Great little gem out in the countryside in a small village. Great pub called the The Chequers great landlord and landlady who were very hospitable and welcoming serving great food. Comfortable and basic accommodation. Continental breakfast was adequate, the closest to a cooked breakfast was boiling your own eggs which was fine and made the experience unique. Our bedroom was on the third floor, no lifts, so you need to be aware that if you have mobility issues to request a lower floor for your needs. The hotel is away from civilisation so if you want to visit shops or go for a coffee be prepared to travel to find them. One point to make others aware which did not bother us in the slightest is that this establishment is owned and run by the Quakers (which is not mentioned in Hotel description on Hotels.com) We will book again if we are down that way again as it is a very quiet and comfortable hotel.

Simple room, beautiful surroundings!
I booked a single room, I was working in the area, it was a really beautiful location. My room was in The Vokings, a converted barn, it was very simple, like student accommodation, but had everything I needed. The Manor and gardens and courtyard are really lovely, my room was very basic but comfortable and was not expensive at all. Thank you 😊🙏

Beautiful location
Very nice location, beautiful house and grounds. Nice welcome and friendly, helpful staff. Plenty of choice for the continental breakfast. The house has history so as you would expect, a little rough around the edges in the room and bathroom, but very clean and comfortable. Would recommend for a very peaceful relaxed couples break.

A last minute booking a great find comfortable & a nice retreat at the end of the day. I would like to explore the area More after my visit as I spent my days at work. There is a historical charm about the place ,It’s lack of frills, it’s functionality a more hostel feel I found very relaxing. The staff helpful over local matters & catering for a earlier breakfast for me.

The place looked lovely. Got into my room and there is no tv . Bathroom across the hall too . Room was right on the stairs and could hear the guests moving around and talking . They do have a restaurant but they only serve groups that are together and not single travellers like myself had to go out of the hotel to find somewhere to eat . Car parking was on grass and it was very muddy my shoes are ruined and had to bin them Very disappointed in this hotel and will not be going there again at all . Would like my money back

Dear Ray, Thank you for your review, we appreciate you taking the time to leave your comments regarding your recent stay at our Conference and Retreat centre. You booked a single room with a private bathroom and not ensuite, so I am uncertain why you were surprised that it was not ensuite. There were no TV's listed on the room amenities nor was there a TV shown on the numerous pictures that advertise the room on the site. You booked your stay on a B&B basis and not a Dinner,bed and breakfast basis, had you mentioned prior to your stay we would have made arrangements for you to have an evening meal. The office was open on Friday,saturday and sunday but you chose not to pop in and highlight your displeasure and give us the opportunity to address any of your concerns at which time I could have also highlighted the various hard standing car parks we have available to our guests. Unfortunately, as you did not mentioned at any point during your stay that you were unhappy and you used all our facilities and stayed the full duration, I am unable to offer you a refund.

A great place for a quiet get together. The plumbing is a bit ancient! Our bathroom had a macerator which occasionally pumped the contents of the toilet into the shower tray.

A peaceful and pleasant haven
Lovely location, not far from the beaten track but a lovely location on the edge of a really nice village, friendly Manager Gillian, and others who helped at breakfast and check out. Basic rooms but good value for money. Easy parking and lovely old manor and converted outbuildings, peaceful walled gardens. Thank you -would deffo stay again!

Unfortunately, on 1st appearance was beautiful, but Hotel .com, have miss sold this Hotel 1) the payment for the stay was taken before the stay. not as sold "payment at property" 2) No TV in the room.3) beautiful as it is, old ,quirky, unfortunately no mention of "no lift" and the stairs, 3 flight "narrow, steep" these need to be high lighted! finally we decided not to stay due to all this problems, no other room was available, the staff tried there best to be helpful, in fact 110%, Hotel.com you have over sold Charney Manor, you description needs rectifying!

Uncomplicated, peaceful stay
I was looking for somewhere affordable, uncomplicated, and where the idea of being somewhere for a personal 'retreat' would be understood. All I needed really was a quiet space, off the beaten track. And this was it! The welcome was straightforward, no frills. Then left to myself. The room was small, but had all I needed - very grateful for the kettle and coffee/tea sachets (could have done with a spoon though). I didn't go into the village, though the pub looked nice enough. The breakfast was very good, a bit better than I expected. Nice choices, and friendly staff. I continued on my way in the morning, by bike, happily refreshed in body and soul.

I stayed here one night and it was fine, the single room was small but the bed comfortable enough. There was a good continental breakfast included in the price. Be warned it is in a very tiny village and the entrance is very easy to drive past in the dark

Great place to stay, lovely location.
tayed here as it is only just over an hour away from Heathrow and because I liked the look of it when looking for somewhere to stay. I'm so glad I booked it!. Stunning manor house on the edge of a beautiful village setting, but within lovely countryside, and a local pub in walking distance. It is 13th century and beautiful, and was so peaceful! Staff and service was excellent; friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. I rang ahead to see if I could get in earlier than the 2pm check-in and it wasnt a problem at all, and very accommodating.The house was lovely and warm when I arrived and throughout my early Noveber stay. My room was a twin room although I was on my own, and was a lovely large and cosy warm room, with an ensuite which again, both were pristine clean . Great view over the beautiful gardens. The single bed was extremely comfortable. Excellent continental breakfast with a lot of plentiful choice, and the dining room was pristine clean and charming. I would highly recommend Charney Manor; it's a beautiful place to stay and in a wonderful setting, with great facilities and staff. I'll certainly be going back there.

A basic room for an excellent price.
Good WiFi so take your laptop if you want to watch TV as there isn’t one in your room. An OK pub I’d less than 360 yards walk where you can eat and drink. I had an ensuite shower that was very powerful. The twin room was very spacious.
