“Very best for location”

When we arrived, the standard room we booked was unavailable and we were given a superior room instead at no extra cost, great. Staff where very good, friendly, helpful esp the porters. Tips are mainly not accepted so don't bother. Yes there where some very minor problems that could easily be fixed but overall it was very clean, comfortable and good value for money. The great thing about it is the location, its perfect. 200m from the Bund, 400m from Nanjing road, and 1km walk from Yu gardens (I walked it twice, its good exercise). There are many good restaurants around esp the Truffre restuarant (italian and very good) and others that serve local quisine. Shanghai Garden, the hotels restaurant is on the 2nd floor. Its got a great menu and always ask for a forks and knives. Rooms are cleaned regularly and the overall service was excellent. I highly recommend this hotel cause of its location and good value for money.

“Good Value Hotel”

I have just stayed at the Metropole in Shanghai for 4 nights. I booked the hotel as it was a good value price for Shanghai. The hotel looks a little tired from the outside but the best thing about the hotel is the location, only a 3 minute walk to the Bund riverfront and 2 blocks from Nanjing Road. The hotel staff were so friendly and polite. I stayed in a Superior room which was great (King Size bed, TV, Air-con, Slippers, Mini Bar, En-suite, Toiletries). The staff even come into the room in the evening and close the curtains and turn the bed down. I didn't use the restaurant as there are some good places to eat in Shanghai. The Lonely Planet describes this hotel as a 'Smoky Old Chinese Hotel', well it's nothing of the sort. I was more than satisfied. There are many good places to stay in Shanghai but if you are not used to ultimate luxury, and are on a budget, then this will more than suffice. Better to book a Superior/Deluxe room though.

“would try elsewhere next time”

good location. no trips supplied or recomended by the staff. there was internet at a price. hotel was used for wedding reception, hence extremely noisy at night. expect to be hounded by beggers and pedlers.

“Cheap, pleasant hotel in the centre of Shanghai”

Convenient for all the attractions of Shanghai, 5-10min walk from nearest metro stop. Staff were courteous and helpful. I arrived on an overnight train for Beijing and reached the hotel at 8am hoping to drop my luggage off before checking in later. The staff however told me I could check-in then and I got some much needed sleep after a long night on the train. The bed was quite hard but this seemed to be a theme of China. I had read reports that noise was a problem for this hotel - I was on the 8th floor and never once found it an issue. Bedroom and bathroom could have done with updating and didn't quite match the styling of the lobby, lift and corridors but all were clean. Air conditioning refused to stay on without my access card in the slot so room would heat up substantially when I was out - perhaps a good thing for my carbon footprint. Overall a conveniently located, pleasnt, cheap hotel and I would stay here again if on a similar budget.

“A basic hotel”

The hotel, outside of the lobby is genarally shabby. My party had 3 rooms, all of which needed redecorating, and the plumbing upgrading. Having said that, the rooms were comfortable, largish and clean. The restaurant was poor, and breakfast at Y25 overpriced, but at least food was available. The location was good, just 2 blocks from the Bund, and 4 blocks from the metro at Middle Henan Road. Overall, the Metropole is probably value for mmoney, but don't expect luxury.

“Good value for a short stay”

Excellent location. Room was basic but functional. Restaurant provided a good cheap continental breakfast. Only drawback was the 24x7 noise from the air conditioning machinery in the court yard which the rooms overlooked. Overall, I'd go back for a short stay.

“In need of some refurbishment but very central and historical”

Walking distance to Nanjing Road and the Bund. In the heart of the historical area of Shanghai. The hotel is in need of some updating but rooms are clean and comfortable. However the rates are reasonable for the location, so ideal as a budget hotel. Staff are overall helpful and polite.

“Clean and good location”

Not very nice welcome. Room was ok but terrible gas smell coming from somewhere! Breakfast was cold, we went down a bit later than usual but it was supposed to be on until 10am. At 915 it seemed like they had started packing up...not worth the money. Room was clean and central location.

“Not impressed”

Stayed two nights on business trip. Hotel reception & lobby nice, HOWEVER - rooms were shabby, noisy - no double glazing , net curtains were beyond filthy - and although bathroom was clean, there was no hot water. Im not even overley fussy - but I expect to have hot water for a shower in my room. Would not stay again.
