great location, need more front office staff as one/two people try and do everything, good food, nice rooms, jump the queue for the boat ride if staying here, front office staff helpful in suggesting extra excursions like the elephant ride
The experience in Periar house inside the thekkady tiger reserve was one of the pleasant experiences of my holiday in Kerala. I was here for one night (30-31, December 2013). The hotel is right the middle of the forest, which gives you a very serene experience of staying right in the middle of the forest, away from the chaos of the city life, there is a dining hall which serves buffet breakfast and dinner , and snacks options are also available in the evening. Quality of the food was good.
The hotel area was very big , with wide alleys and spacious rooms. there are gardens, where you can just sit and relax, its very calm and peaceful.
The staffs were very courteous , and arranged for the periar lake boating tickets at the checkin time, (this is the major attraction ), try to book the early morning boat seats which starts from 7.30AM.
The are 2 more hotels inside the reserve, Aranya Niwas and one more.(all are KTDC hotels) I took a walk with my wife in the evening till the entrance of the boating, it was really pleasant and the stay here was very fulfilling.
we enjoyed thoroughly here , we wished to stay one more night here, but since we had our bookings in allepey so we had to move on.
Stay here for atleast 2 nights , and enjoy many other options like elephant ride and jeep safaris, all which can be arranged from the reception.
For your keral trip this is one place which cannot be missed at any cost if you love nature!
It turned out that we were the only guests in the hotel. The staff were incredibly helpful and the location could not be better. The rooms were very nice although the beds were a bit hard.If you are looking to treat yourself in India this is a great place to do so.
Was assigned room 305 towards the back of the property (this shares a boundary with Periyar Reserve). This room small and kind of difficult to reach as there is plenty of stairs to tackle. Bird calls (eerie at times) float across and can be a tad disconcerting. All wood paneled room and cozy in appearance. Housekeeping forgot to refurbish room supplies and this was "promptly" done the next day....guess one could blame it on the weekend rush. Property has a pool with hammocks and seating around it and plenty of entertainment for families with kids, though some are pay-and-use options (archery, motor toy cars etc).

Excellent owners and staff. They arranged all the sight seeing for us. They go out of their way to help you.
The jungle safari was organized in nearby Tamilnadu even though there was a local issue at Kerala. The shop Hilltop in Kumily, suggested by fathima for local shopping was very reasonable for the prices of spices and nuts. Overall very good experience.
