We have travelled to a lot of places. Now and again you find a place which is really superb. Villa Sofija is one such place. We had a suite which was tastefully furnished. The location is perfect in the old town, near the lake and the beach. It was quiet too but near everything you need. The owner demands high standards and the hotel is very well run. Breakfast was beautifully served. We ate outside in the shade. The dining room was delightful and the food superb. We also ate at the pizza restaurant run by the owner and it too was very good. This place is a little gem. We loved it.

I'm not usually a big fan of guesthouses. I prefer a little more anonymity and a few more services. But this is one of my favorite places I have ever stayed. From the street the building locks like it is under construction or at least not completed, but inside you are in a traditional stone building, staying in a cozy room with a stone floor and walls. The real feature is the very impressive view from your balcony out over Lake Ohrid and the streets of the lower old town. The room had such charm and character and was so comfortable--especially with the little heater during an unseasonably cold spell (that made the lake so atmospheric). I loved staying here and highly recommend it to others. It is a bit hard to find. First, get yourself to St. Kliment's Square. With the Lake right in front of you, the old town rises to your right. A number of streets head off into the old town, but find "Czar Samoil" street, which is one of the main ones: a little wider than the others, flat at first, and with stores and restaurants lining it on both sides. Walk until you pass Pizza Leonardo (highly recommended) on your left and Restaurant Antiko (also recommended) on your right. A small street breaks off from the road to your right. This is "Methodi Pachke", the street the hotel is on. It widens and heads up the hill. You have a steep five minute climb ahead of you. You will come to the sign for the Guest House right before this street merges with another.

The owner is very friendly, greeted me by name when I arrived (rather than scrabbling for papers as is often the case even with small properties) and was available if you needed assistance. Able to take credit card payment too.
The room was quite simple and not the most modern, but well equipped, clean and actually quite a lot of space. Had a fridge, sink, cutlery/crockery, and a couple of camping hobs/hotplates to use for cooking. Had table and sofa seating plus a balcony with table and chairs. The balcony wasn't overlooked by any other buildings or rooms which was really nice to have some privacy to sit out.
The walls were a little thin in terms of hearing people coming/going or using the shower next door, but not in a particularly troubling way.
The location was really good, just off the square with the iconic tree. They have a sandwich board on the square pointing the way (as it's just tucked round a little corner behind a restaurant) - not sure I would have found it otherwise, but once you find it it's easy.
Provided a map of Ohrid and some tourist info. Sure he would have provided more if I had asked. Helped with bus info to get to next destination.
I would stay here again.

The clerks at the reception are no smileys. It was quite difficult to know if they are pleased to see you patronizing their hotel. The rooms are too small for us. The food in the restaurant is excellent and the waiters are friendly.
