"When we arrived just after 2pm it was like stepping onto the Marie Celeste. We finally found a few customers who told us that only member of staff doing front of house was getting ice cream for their daughter. When she appeared we asked about food but was told that the kitchen closed at 2 and that we would need to go out if we were hungry.
Checking us in, she was very pleasant but hadn’t read my email sent a couple of days before to say we were bringing a dog which didn’t smack of efficiency.
The stairs are steep and narrow and would not suit anyone with mobility issues or even pass current building regulations. The room was clean but cold and the heater, although apparently on, gave out no heat.
The bedside lamp didn’t work although I was later told that it was just a loose connection; great if it gives you a shock! Nor did the light over the mirror in the bathroom.
We ate in the bar in the evening when we were served by a very helpful young lady who seemed to be doing her very best in spite of having worked there for a week.
The food was not great.
When we went to our room the batteries in the remote were not working so we had to go downstairs and ask for new ones.
For breakfast in the morning, again we had to go in search of staff. The lady was delightful and helpful and made a very good breakfast but she was having to juggle with housekeeping as well.
I know staff are costly when not busy but might I suggest a minimum of 2 per shift to provide any kind of service."
