Choose from three different beaches, each with its own character, along this unspoilt stretch of Maui’s southern shoreline.

In the looming shadow of the Pu’u Olai crater, Makena Beach State Park is a wild area of stunning natural beauty. Swimmers, sunbathers and bodyboarders will find it hard to choose between the park’s three diverse beaches, each with its own special attraction.

Makena Beach, commonly known as Big Beach, is one of the longest and steepest in Maui, extending almost 1 kilometre along the shoreline. Its name means “abundance” and the teeming marine life waiting to be discovered beneath the waves certainly lives up to the name. This popular snorkelling and bodyboarding spot is usually supervised by lifeguards. Enjoy stunning views of the Molokini atoll from the shade of the kiawe trees that line the beach.

Around the lava rocks to the north of Makena Beach lies Pu’u Olai, or Little Beach. At just 200 metres long, this secluded cove is one of the few public beaches in Hawaii where nude sunbathing is permitted. On Sunday afternoons every last centimetre of sand is occupied, as people pour in to hear the traditional Hawaiian drummers who congregate in this scenic spot. The entertainment usually lasts through until sunset and provides a lively and sociable end to the day.

The black sand of Naupaka Beach is formed from ground volcanic lava, which is striking to look at but sharp and unyielding to walk or lie on. However, by way of compensation, a coral reef just offshore provides some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving conditions in the park, with crystal-clear water and a wealth of colourful fish. Bring plastic beach shoes to explore in comfort.

A scenic trail runs from Naupaka Beach to the top of the Pu’u Olai cone, otherwise known as Earthquake Hill, offering panoramic vistas of the rugged Makena coastline. The going is tough in places so it’s a good idea to avoid the hottest part of the day and make sure you carry plenty of water – however, the wonderful views are well worth the effort.

Makena Beach State Park is situated to the south of Wailea. There is free car parking at the beach, open during daylight hours.
