Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park is located in the very centre of St. Louis, close to the point where Lewis and Clark embarked on their first expedition west of the Mississippi. This, and many more voyages of exploration like it, was made possible by the Louisiana Purchase, in which the United States bought a huge tract of land, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico into Canada, from the French. It is these expeditions and their leaders' pioneering spirit that are celebrated in the park, its Gateway Arch, and the Museum of Westward Expansion.
The Gateway Arch, also built as a tribute to Thomas Jefferson, has become the symbol of St. Louis. It measures 192 metres across at its base, and stands 192 metres tall at its apex if you have a head for heights, the spectacular views from the top are well worth the climb.
At the base of the arch you'll find the fascinating Museum of Westward Expansion. Learn about the expeditions made by Lewis and Clark and other early pioneers, and marvel at photographs and murals from the period. The museum is also home to a number of historical artifacts the teepee and covered wagon are particular highlights.
For more historical edification head to the Old Courthouse. This beautiful 19th-century building, with its green cupola dome, is located in the heart of the park. Inside, the interiors are just as magnificent. Admire the murals on the courthouse rotunda and explore the painstakingly restored courtrooms. Learn about the history of St. Louis and the controversial Dred Scott case in the compact museum. In 1857 Dred Scott, a slave, lost the legal battle for his freedom, but the outrage surrounding the case precipitated the eventual abolishment of slavery.
As well as being a place of historical significance, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park is a popular destination for locals and visitors who want to relax by the waterside or explore the Mississippi river. Head to Discovery Bike Rentals under the Gateway Arch Grand Staircase to rent a bike, and then set off along the riverbank. For a more leisurely afternoon, book a cruise on a replica 19th-century paddle-wheeler. Cruises depart from the southern leg of the Gateway Arch.
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park starts getting busy in spring and crowds don't die down until late autumn, so during this period you'll need to book tickets and arrange bike hire in advance. Winter is quieter, but remember that exhibits close on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Venture on foot from St. Louis city centre or any of the nearby attractions.
