It is a lovely building from outside it looks amazing but the interior does not match the exterior, nothing major, just a little tired and in need of some refurbishment in places, room sizes varied enormously between huge (double suite) and very cramped (twin room).

Disappointing
My second short stay here and it will be my last. Double room was very dated - as was my previous experience - butvthe renovated rooms are more expensive. This room, like my last, did not have and power sockets by the bed. Trailing extension lead and aerial lead below TV - no PAT stickers and also a hazard. Mattress had collapsed on side when you sat down on it. Shower was a basic shower head off taps. No water pressure and fluctuated between hot and cold. Room was cold as the temp outside was below freezing and the heating didn't seem to warm inside enough. Lift in corridor has a loud announcement which could be heard every time the lift doors opened on the 2nd floor - and my room wasnt close to the lift! Overall a disappointing and underwhelming experience. Only the off season low prices redeemed it. Will go to Premier Inn next time!

a couple of snags
I was in a twin room which was a bit tired but very functional. I stayed 3 nights. Each day the lock did not open after midday. A trip down to reception reset the lock with no problems. The breakfast was a hot buffet. The cooking batches were too big. This meant a wait between refreshes in which time someone had taken my table.

Decent hotel
A corporate function with 210 guests. The staff were polite, friendly and coped admirably. No complaints about the food and spent a comfortable night at the premises.

Well past it's sell by date
Very tired and dated decor in room. Reminders of Bates Motel. Heating was on but radiator insufficient size so room was cold. The pale pink 1980's carpet was threadbare and stained in places. The furniture was very old. Shower over bath was poor - water flow was more of a trickle. At check out i wasn't asked how my stay was, probably because they know people would complain. Breakfast was actually good - the best part of the stay. Definitely would not stay here again.

Well my experience and what you can expect. It is a old fashioned hotel,it is very clean and tidy, well presented, very friendly and helpful staff, customers are also very friendly, most are local people, shops nearby, food excellent, staff cant fault them, happy to help and courteous. Definitely be visiting again. Sea-front close by.

The Hotel is very run down very dirty and the staff are not helpful or friendly at all, I have stayed at the orwell for over 8 years and found it has really gone down they dont clean the shower or rooms well at all and the staff years back where a lot more friendly back in the day

Get what you pay for.
Wanted a cheap night away so got what I expected and had seen looking at the pictures online. A lovely old building in need of much TLC. Bathroom was modern as good as most 9/10, room itself dated and cramped but clean and tidy.

Excellent staff, poor for allergies.
Overall it was OK. Very poor response to food allergies (dairy-free for my wife). No account taken for allergies in food snacks. Alternative milk and margarine available in request. No other alternatives for breakfast, just pastries not suitable, yoghurt not suitable. Mark in toilet was disappointing, easily came off with brush. Sink partially blocked.

I wouldn’t stay here again and wouldn’t recommend it to others. Upon check in, I was given their basic double room when I booked and paid for the luxury one. Once you see the photos they have of each one you’ll understand why. They didn’t say anything about the room just the room number and handed me the card. I went up to the room and it was clearly not the luxury double I paid for. So I thought, no big deal must have been a mistake. Well the guy at the front desk said he didn’t have the room I booked available. Why wasn’t this told to me at check in? Instead, I can only assume they thought they could get away with me not noticing?! Anyways he checked and they had a twin luxury room available, showed it to me and I said that’d be fine. Well then he said he couldn’t just give it to me, he had to check with the manager. He then came back to me and said you’ve got it, as if I’m meant to be grateful when I’ve already paid for this type of room. This took a total of 25 minutes to sort. I would just go to the best western up the road instead. This place is easily missable. So unprofessional. Also do not opt for the breakfast. It’s a buffet and they didn’t even have eggs. Paid £11 for bacon and hash browns as I don’t eat other things. Not worth it.

Attractive Victorian hotel about 15 minutes' walk from the front. Friendly, patient staff and an excellent home base. Good restaurant and bar on the premises. Room was clean and comfortable, but the bathroom was somewhat dated - my brother booked a "superior" room which was much more modern.

Very helpful staff but the hotel has changed hands since we last stayed. The room we stayed in was booked as superior twin but was pretty basic the worse room we have stayed in and we have been coming here for the last 4 years. also a long way from lifts as my husband has mobility problems. Furniture dated old fashioned , bathroom very basic cleaning not good. The Orwell is looking its age. Even the menu although plentiful lacks variety.

Tired decor
The building looks impressive on arrival and there is a feeling of grandeur as you enter. This continues up the carpeted staircase but as you head to your bedroom there is a utilitarian feeling with tired decor. Our bedroom overlooked the very untidy 'yard', which was very noisy when staff threw rubbish in the bins. The bathroom is one of the worst I've seen in an hotel with blistering paint on the door and bath panel; the metal window seemed rusted in position with most of the paint peeling off. The typed instructions for the shower bore no relation to the actual bath/shower taps. The staff were pleasant enough but I doubt I'll be returning.
