Short overnight stay
The hotel suited our purpose as a short overnight stay close to a place where we needed to be the following morning. The Staff were extremely helpful from start to finish.

A very friendly place with everything you need on site. Staff are relaxed and welcoming. A genuine old English pub!

Hit and miss. Decent value for the room size.
Nice pub. Large bedroom (well mine was) ut bathroom is sub stanard even by pub room standards. The trucks on the road driving right by the building and bedroom means you are literally shaken awake several times at night! Service was patchy : either perfunctory and brusque (and staff didn't know or didn't advise when meal times were) or super friendly depending on who was at hand. Don't try ordering dinner at 2 minutes past 9pm as the chef “...already left the building” - presumably by get-away vehicle !

On a Tuesday there is a restricted menu currently, but it is only 3 dishes that are not available, the rest of the menu which is substantial, is available.

Our bathrooms are as big as you can get in the main 200 year old building, but I would not say they are small, but depends what you like to do in the bathroom that needs a lot of space. We have 11 main dishes complimented by 5 specials, so a total choice of 16 dishes, sorry that was not enough for you, but we think its a great menu.

Friendly staff. Clean accommodation. Quaint place but a bit dark. Food was on the whole poor. Vegetables were mush and burger really cheap meat.

The room was in the pub courtyard and very very noisy. It took me a while to be able to sleep as people drinking and laughing laudly and the voices were in the room as there was only a glass window between us. Staff was friendly and food was fine but I would expect a quiet room from a hotel.

Thanks for the review, people often ask for the courtyard but people do have a good time here and we close at 11pm so may have been some people having a really good time that caused a bit of noise, sorry.

Would never stay again on a Monday
Can't fault the staff and the food (dinner and breakfast), both excellent. The room was ok, a little dated but very spacious and comfortable. My only real gripe was that it was incredibly noisy. It turns out Mondays are pub quiz night and they put me in a room right over the main bar. It was very noisy and went on late, then in the morning after I'd only managed a bit of sleep I was then woken by a large number of lorries and cars that rumble just past the window as the room was roadside. I might stay again, but never on a Monday and only if they put me in a room that wasn't over the pub.

Monday is quiz night but the quiz is over by 10:30 and all the 'quizzers' have left by then. Sorry that you could hear it and with the road noise, that is out of our control as if there is an incident on the near by A34, we do get a bit of excess traffic trying to avoid the incident. We do have rooms available in the courtyard, so you can request one on the next visit in advance.

Arrived at around 6 pm after long and difficult journey of six and half hours. Seemed to be no particular place to check in, but barmaid showed us to our Room which was across the courtyard from main pub building. Room okay - everything you need - but a little chilly. Also the toilet did not flush. Turned up the heating. Read the information provided and decided to ask for an extra blanket - as described in the folder. Manager could find no blankets but did find extra duvet. Had booked a place with rooms and dining specifically as we did not want to have to look elsewhere for food - so dined in the pub that evening. Young barmaid seemed to be doing every task - serving behind the bar/ taking food orders/ directing to tables/ serving food. Gentleman (could have been Owner Manager although he did not introduce himself) did take our food order - and did ask later whether it was okay - but seemed rather grumpy and not exactly customer-friendly. Food okay - usual pub-type food despite the place being described as a Gastro-pub. Morning breakfast fine - somewhat disorganised - had to ask for milk, no sugar on the table etc.etc. Ate breakfast in the same room as dinner the previous evening. Rather dark and dismal - poor lighting. Eating in semi-darkness not comfortable !! Extra note - radiator in bedroom dangerously hot - likely to be touched since there are no grab-handles in the shower or the bathroom

Thank you for the review and I would like to reply to a few points. The check in area is the bar and as we are a pub we do not have a separate area for check in. Regarding the temperature of the room, I offered to check the heater which was full on and the room seemed fine, but as requested, we did provide an extra double duvet for you. Regarding the service by myself, I never have been described as grumpy, but as I was on duty, I also covered all the normal tasks that we undertake in the pub and it was at that time that I found out that you thought the room was cold. Regarding being a Gastro pub, we have never described ourselves as such and I think you may have been confused by a pub next door. Regarding breakfast, we always ask guests to help themselves to cereal, juice and milk and we provide the choice of tea or coffee and then take the order for breakfast. There is nothing disorganised about our breakfast service. The lighting in the breakfast area is purposefully 'cool' to go with the character of the pub and to have full white light would not suit the ambience, however, you did sit next to a double window, so a little confused by the comment? Re your extra note - when checking out you mentioned that the radiator was very hot and your husband said that was because he had turned the radiator to full on as you were cold, we have since turned it back down again!

very much just a pub as opposed to a hotel.
Unfortunately we were there on the last Friday of the month when the pub has a band playing. I do not think the rooms were all booked and therefore think they could have put us in a room that was NOT directly above where the band was playing! the dining area was just part of the bar and very busy. The service generally could have been better but the place was quaint.

Teresa, thanks for the review, all our rooms were full that night and the band finish at 10:30pm which we dont think is unreasonable for a Friday night. We are a pub with letting rooms that are really busy with new and returning guests who love it. We do have a separate dining area where you would have had breakfast but as with all pubs, there are areas that people eat in the bar area. Maybe you were expecting just a hotel, sorry if you were, but the description of the Cherry Tree is clear on the booking web sites. Service is key to us and I dont know why you would have not experienced it, sorry.

Lovely place to stay. The little lodge rooms are next to the smoking area, but wasn't a major issue. Was quite noisy early evening. Nice little pub. Breakfast was served from 7am which was very useful as we had to set off early. Breakfast staff friendlier than evening staff

Traditional English Historical Country Pub
Excellent location for Abingdon and Oxford. Very pleasant staff, free car parking. We stayed in a double en suite room away from the bars / restaurants. Comfortable, clean room with more than adequate breakfast.
