Located about 31 miles from Kuopio, Suonenjoki is a happy little town. Every Finn knows about the Suonenjoki Strawberry Carnival, which attracts people during the summer. Suonenjoki is also known for its excellent fishing opportunities and a laidback atmosphere in which the beauty of nature is never far away. Head for the neighbouring municipalities to enjoy, for example, the Sport and Spa Hotel Vesileppis at Leppävirta, or the scenery of Southern Konnevesi National Park.
Start your journey in central Suonenjoki and its excellent sights and activities. Visit the timber-built Suonenjoki Church in the centre of town, only a few hundred metres from the train station, and visit Suonenjoki Museum, situated in an old grain warehouse.
Venture outside the centre to visit Kolikkoinmäki Workers Home Museum and the Kuivataipale Museum Canal. The Workers Home Museum is located in the mill’s old workers’ neighbourhood and is full of old wooden houses. The museum itself has been refurbished in the style of the 1950s. The museum canal will double as a work-out, as the caisson is manually operated.
Most people like to visit Suonenjoki for the Strawberry Carnival, when the city is full of life and excitement. Savour the delicious berries and enjoy the free music. The carnival also includes an opening ceremony and a large marketplace. Or enjoy Iisrock with live music and the Rock’n Run exercise challenge.
You can arrange an inexpensive holiday in Suonenjoki by including its scenery in your plans. The region has several fishing sites, such as the Iso-Rasti, Niinivesi and Suonenjoki Rivers. Or enjoy the scenery of Southern Konnevesi National Park where you can also enjoy boating, rowing or hiking. Make sure that you spot the nesting osprey and enjoy the marvellous sights from the top of Mount Kalajanvuori.
Suonenjoki is easy to visit as it is situated along Highway 9 between Jyväskylä and Kuopio. Suonenjoki also has its own bus station with easy access to local municipalities. The scenery of Northern Savonia is best seen by rowing, so hit the waves at Suonenjoki and follow the established rowing paths.
