Streetlife Museum of Transport

Streetlife Museum of Transport which includes interior views and heritage elements
Learn about outdated modes of transportation, climb aboard old vehicles and wander through the picturesque gardens of this nostalgia-inducing museum.

The Streetlife Museum of Transport is a fascinating institution with a varied collection of antique cars, carriages and other historic modes of transportation. The exhibits lie within a purpose-built complex with gardens, which is part of Hull’s impressive Museums Quarter. Learn about the history of transportation through the eclectic exhibits in this museum, which has about 12,500 objects.

Wander down the replica of a 1940s high street and consider how society has changed in the intervening years. The array of sounds and smells will transport you back to those times. Bring your kids to learn about a bygone era and examine the old tools and vehicles. Climb aboard the old-fashioned two-story tram and inspect the levers and seats. Let your child put on a hat and play the role of conductor.

Get a closer look at the horse-drawn carriage and think about how it was an essential mode of transportation a century ago. Among the other highlights are the signal box, the steam-powered road carriage and the exhibit on cycling and bicycles.

Relax on a bench in the scenic gardens of the museum. Gaze at the intriguing statue in the center of the elegant fountain and stroll along paths that meander through the landscape gardens. Patches of grass and benches offer ideal picnic spots.

Note that the site opens daily from morning until late afternoon, apart from Sundays, when it opens later. The museum is free to enter, while it does accept donations.

The Streetlife Museum of Transport is in the Museums Quarter in the old town center of Hull. Take a bus to one of the stops near the northwestern bank of the River Hull or walk east from the city’s railway station for about 15 minutes to get here. See other sights in this district, including the Hull and East Riding Museum, the Museum of Club Culture and the Philip Larkin Toad.
