Praça das Artes

Wander the grounds of this cultural complex, which is both home to the city’s finest art institutions and an architectural landmark itself.

The Praça das Artes (Square of the Arts) is a peculiar arts complex that is as much an artwork as anything displayed within its halls. Spend an hour exploring its intriguing grounds, which are characterized by angular, out-of-place constructions combined with old architecture. Take a seat to watch a contemporary dance performance or listen to the city symphony practice in the conservatory.

The construction of this arts complex began in 2009 and was completed in 2012. The Brazilian architects who designed it intended to make it a striking change from the uniform São Paulo cityscape. Their work has since been nominated for several design awards.

Admire its peculiar façade from across the street or from within. Its design, which combines angular blocks with the historic walls of the original music conservatory and unevenly placed windows, represents the conflicting art forms that are at work inside. The complex is designed to touch the ground as little as possible feel free to walk the open spaces created and admire its fused styles.

The Praça das Artes houses a number of the city’s best art institutions. Visitors may be lucky enough to witness practices and performances by the Municipal Symphonic Orchestra, the São Paulo Choir or the City Ballet Company. The compound features modern dance studio rooms and old-style music halls alongside galleries for textiles and design. Check the schedule online for practice times and the best visiting hours.

After enjoying this art complex, see a show at the nearby Municipal Theatre. Stroll across the scenic Viaduto do Chá and enjoy views of Anhangabaú Park. Once east of the bridge, get a taste of São Paulo history at the Pátio do Colégio or the Praça da Sé, two landmarks that date back to the city’s foundation.

The Praça das Artes is located northwest of the city centre and can be reached on foot from most areas of old downtown. It is free to enter and open on weekdays.
