Wine was first produced here in 1797 by Spanish conquistadors and Franciscan missionaries. Large-scale commercial wine production began about 100 years later.
The Paso Robles wine region encompasses approximately 200 wineries. The majority are tucked into the hills surrounding Highway 81. Explore the area on foot along hundreds of miles of walking trails. The city itself also has a handful of trails, including the 0.92-mile (1.5-kilometre) paved Turtle Creek Loop and the short loop trail around Sherwood Forest. Rest after a long day at one of the spa centers. For centuries, visitors have come to Paso Robles for its natural hot springs.
