Nottingham
Nottingham Castle showing a park, a monument and skyline
A castle on a grassy mound stands as a reminder of Nottingham’s rich medieval history, while the diverse playhouses and shopping malls look modern.

The Nottingham City Centre is a cultural hub with theaters and historic attractions. At its core is an enormous town square, surrounded by the city’s main shopping streets. Learn about an intriguing history through the old-world pubs, the medieval castle and the monuments to Robin Hood.

Perched on a rock overlooking most of the city center is Nottingham Castle. Climb up to the grassy plateau and enter the castle for its art and history galleries. The castle dates back to the 11th century, while the current incarnation was built in the 1600s.

At the foot of the mound stands the Robin Hood Statue, a reminder that Nottinghamshire was the setting of the character’s tales.

Continue reliving the area’s fascinating history at the adjacent Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem pub that is thought to date back to 1189. Learn about its resident ghosts and the cave tunnels that lead through the rock to the castle.

On a rainy day, browse the range of independent retailers and upscale stores at the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre and Victoria Centre Shopping Mall. When the sun comes out, watch a game of cricket at the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground or hang out in the Old Market Square. The plaza provides excellent photo opportunities of its glorious fountain and the Nottingham Council House with an iconic dome.

Appreciate the cultural treats that Nottingham offers. Bring your kids to the traditional pantomimes and family shows at the Nottingham Playhouse and the Theatre Royal. Both also produce sophisticated ballets, operas and plays.

Nottingham City Centre is in the heart of the city and can be accessed via several tram and bus stops. You can also ride the train to the city’s main railway station. Branch out into the suburbs for such landmarks as the University of Nottingham, the Attenborough Nature Centre and the Mapperley Golf Club.

Let the historic pubs and castle of Nottingham City Centre bring you back to the era of Robin Hood.
