Quirky roadside attractions, breathtaking natural views and historic museums paying tribute to the Wild West await in this Midwestern region.

The Nebraska Panhandle, an elongated area in the western part of the state, is an unspoiled landscape with unique attractions, beautiful parks and plenty of space for outdoor activities. Wander through a recreated pioneer town, hike in rocky terrain and discover the history of Nebraska’s fur trade.

At the very top of the panhandle bordering South Dakota is the town of Chadron, an old fur trading post in the Pine Ridge region. Go biking through the Pine Ridge National Recreation Area, take a horseback riding tour in the Nebraska National Forest and camp under the stars in Chadron State Park. See artifacts from the town’s fur trading days at the Museum of the Fur Trade.

Visit the Sandhills region to experience the eccentric town of Alliance. Learn about the daily lives of the pioneers at Dobby’s Frontier Town, where exhibits include an authentic schoolhouse and general store. Also of note is the Carhenge, a quirky replica of Stonehenge made with old car parts. The site, built in 1987, includes a gift shop and a visitors’ center.

Head to Crawford to hike through Toadstool Geologic Park where the natural rock formations appear to drip over the landscape. Go fishing in Fort Robinson State Park and tour the Fort Robinson Museum, which tells the story of this outpost and its role in World War II. Golf enthusiasts can practice their putt at Legend Buttes Golf Course, a scenic course with stunning views of Saddle Rock.

Elsewhere, the rural town of Gering promises beautiful sunsets, nature trails and outdoor activities. Backpack through Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area and mountain bike in the Buffalo Creek Wildlife Management Area.

Western Nebraska Regional Airport serves a few nearby destinations including Lincoln, Omaha and Denver. However, a car is required to explore most of the region. Bring comfortable clothing and footwear to help you navigate the rugged terrain and paths. Stop in shops and cafés as you explore to ask locals about the area.

Escape the hustle and bustle of populated cities in the wild Nebraska Panhandle.
