This was my second time staying at Hotel Birks in Montreal. I travel regularly to Montreal to visit my son who is in college. This is one of the finest hotels in the city and is conveniently located in the heart of Montreal. The good news is that I found my stay on this visit for the most part exceptional with some unusual caveats. First when we arrived, I was offered an upgrade. Customary for VIP Hotel bookings, however considering I was traveling with my daughter the upgrade that I was offered only had one king bed a pull-out sofa bed and a single vanity, whereas the room I had already booked was larger, had two queen beds and a double vanity and it was on a higher floor with a better view of the cathedral. After seeing both rooms we decided to stay with the original booking, but this extended the check in process by at least 30 minutes. We weren't offered any additional amenities. In addition, once checked in we weren't offered any assistance with our bags which I found to be unusual. Another unusual aspect of our stay was the curt tone of the hosts in the restaurant. On my previous visit I was never questioned when sitting at the bar as to whether or not I was a guest of the hotel. This happened several times to both me and my daughter and quite honestly made us feel uncomfortable. Management should address how employees of the hotel approach patrons. Overall service, room and experience was great. Will come again.

This is a beautiful hotel and the rooms were comfortable and classy! The staff were friendly and we were in a perfect location for everything we needed. We did have to request enough towels (there were three of us). We enjoyed the restaurant but were prohibited from sitting in the outside section when we came in for drinks because we were told it was only for people who ordered food. That seemed strange since we were paying quite a lot to stay there. Overall, it was fantastic and we would definitely stay again!

We didn't like the blackout curtains. Not easy to open/close/seal. Pillows were the kind that are puffy but go flat where your head rests. There was a used food container lid under the chair. And another open concept bathroom. The bathroom had a window (that u could close) to the bedroom. We prefer solid walls. But overall, all of these things were generally minor. It was very clean (except the food container). And very quiet. Staff were kind. Would recommend.

Four issues I would like to bring up. 1. On the day of check out, I asked for a check out extension from 11am to 12pm. Front desk allowed it. I stepped out and came back to my room around 11:45am. The access card wouldn’t work. I had two rooms, one for me and another for my parents. I had to go back to front desk to update the access cards. It was an inconvenience. Front desk could’ve updated my access card when I first asked for the extension. 2. On the day of check out, it was raining. We asked for two umbrellas. We ended up waiting for 10 minutes. Uber driver came and we had to leave. Fortunately, ok the way out, the valet gave us one umbrella. For a high end hotel, on a rainy day, it should not be difficult to anticipate more of your customers are going to need umbrellas. More umbrellas should have been prepared for hotel guests. 3. Room service - During the day, I was out for most of the afternoon, but room clean up didn’t come until around 5pm. Service seems slow to come around 4. I was told by front desk that sauna is only available at the Spa, which only opens from Wednesday to Sunday. Seems to be a very limited access and availability. I only stayed from Monday to Wednesday. Not the end of the world but dissappointed it wasn’t available.

I was very disappointed in the fact that I was not told that there is major construction going on all through the night. I was awoken early hours of the morning, 3 AM and onwards with Lou, banging and metal scraping and dumping. Did not sleep a wink and left tired and not relaxed. I have stayed there many times and feel that this was not good representation of guest experience.

Staff was extremely pleasant. Hotel was beautiful don't get me wrong, however it was not 5 total five due to the fact that there was no pool, the space allocated for the gym was disappointing and there was an unpleasant smell in the hallway of the floor I was on that seemed like it was embedded in the carpet. Lastly, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to turn on the bathroom fan if at all... definitely didn't have a traditional switch. Other than those issues it was a nice hotel to stay in and was very local. Valet parking was both nice and a slight inconvenience, but more expensive than other hotels in the area. No parking really in the area so you have literally no choice. Valet team was extremely courteous and respectful.

Property is top notch and rooms are great. Very convenient. Unfortunately the fire alarm went off just in our room at 10pm. staff was nice an prompt in responding. it was a malfunction they thought they fixed... it went off again 45 mins after they left. fixed again - but we chose to move rooms after that at 11pm in case it went off again... would have appreciated a discount or a comp on the stay... this was late at night and we were leaving next morning... we got a bottle of champagne but not all drink.. at such a nice hotel a discount or comp would have been a nice gesture

Overall it’s nice place. The food was wonderful. Staff was helpful. The shower was great. Only drawback was the beds are uncomfortable. They are hard and unforgiving, and the air is really dry in the rooms. I woke up dehydrated. The bottled water is complementary at least ther wa that. Staff were super helpful, strong our many bags when we arrived early and the room was t ready yet. The front desk gave us a free map of the city and were willing to help with whatever they could like calling us a cab. The food in the rest was wonderful. The chef found a way to cook simple yet delicious meals working around my dietary restrictions.

It is a beautiful hotel and the room size is great. Having a swimming pool would have been a great plus. The location is good and close to the main attractions and restaurants.
