Lakselv Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
As the third largest municipality, you can experience spectacular Norwegian nature all year round in Lakselv.

Lakselv is a fisherman’s paradise, with a large number of rivers with plenty of fish to catch, such as Lakselva. You can explore the mountains in summer and winter, and visit some of the most unique areas in Norway. If you choose to visit Lakselv during the summer, you can also take part in the local festivals taking place, such as the Midnight Rock Festival.

Lakselv is the administrative centre of the municipality of Porsanger in Nordland and has a great range of shops. Idyllically situated at the head of the Porsanger fjord, it provides excellent opportunities to roam the fjords. Following the last Ice Age, this was one of the first areas in Norway to become ice-free, and at Trollholmsund, you will be able to look at the special dolomite columns.

If you are holidaying in Northern Norway, you should take a weekend trip to Lakselv and visit Rappafossen for its breathtaking cliffs and waterfalls. Porsanger Museum has exhibitions about Sami, Norwegian and Kven cultural history, and Porsanger war history. Head to Silfar Canyon situated on the River Børselva, considered to be the deepest valley in Northern Europe.

Remember to bring plenty of clothes even if you’re visiting during the summer, and in particular if you plan to head out to sea. It can be handy to have access to a car so that you can visit the various sights at your own pace.

Should you choose to travel by air, Lakselv Airport is nearby and has daily connections to Tromsø and Kirkenes, and less frequent connections to some of the other towns in Northern Norway. There are also buses running between the towns throughout the entire area. However, travelling between the towns and villages can be difficult without a hire car.

With plenty on offer, a visit to Lakselv allows you to experience the unique nature in this part of Norway. Here you can experience Sami culture and learn about the cultural exchange across the borders over the years. Don’t forget to visit North Cape on your travels.
