On the south shore of Kaua’i Island, explore tropical gardens or enjoy a game of golf on this coastal town’s nine-hole course.

Tucked away on the south shore of Kaua’i Island you will find Kalāheo, a vibrant coastal town. This small community boasts a variety of attractions within its borders. Play a relaxing game of golf, stroll through tropical gardens or sample local produce at the farmers market.

The Kukuiolono Golf Course is one of Hawaii’s best-kept golfing secrets. Sugar king Walter McBride had it built as his own personal course but, in 1919, he donated it to the people of Kaua’i. Tip your hat to McBride as you pass his grave near the 8th tee.The nine-hole course is perfect for beginners and experienced golfers alike. Enjoy an affordable game of golf while admiring the stunning coastal vistas for which Hawaiʻi is famous. When you have finished playing, sit down to a meal at the on-site restaurant. Kukuiolono Golf Course is open daily during daylight hours.

Kalaheo is also home to the headquarters of Hawaii’s National Tropical Botanical Garden, an organization dedicated to researching and saving endangered tropical plants and ecosystems. Take a tour of its five gardens, two of which are located just outside of Kalaheo. Walk through McBride Garden and see towering palms and exotic plants. Admire the manicured gardens and statues of Allerton Garden, which was once a retreat for Hawaii’s Queen Emma. Both gardens offer guided tours, which must be booked in advance.

Every Tuesday, the Kalāheo Farmers Market is held at the Kalāheo Neighbourhood Centre. Purchase produce grown locally on Kaua’i Island and meet the farmers who grow it. Stock up on exotic flowers, fresh herbs and organic fruit and vegetables. Taste juicy mangoes and drink from a fresh coconut through a straw. Remember to bring cash and your own bags and arrive early, because the market is popular with locals as well as tourists.

Kalāheo is a 30-minute drive from Lihue Airport. Stay overnight at Kalāheo’s local inn and enjoy a meal at one of the town’s several restaurants.

"This is an amazing property (staff, location, amenities), but the food and beverage quality is sorely lacking. Overall: Every drink is at least $16. Mind you, this is a no-frills mixed drink marketed as a cocktail. I use the word "cocktail" here very loosely. I guess this is to be expected; you're ..."
