Indianapolis Zoo

Indianapolis Zoo featuring zoo animals as well as a family
This world-class facility combines pioneering conservation and research facilities with state-of-the-art exhibits and good, old-fashioned fun.

A visit to Indianapolis Zoo will introduce you to over 300 species of animal in specially constructed biomes which replicate their unique habitats. Much more than just an animal park, the zoo also comprises an aquarium and botanical gardens, as well as a host of other attractions.

Meet magnificent Amur tigers in the Forests Biome, where you can learn about the conservation programmes which are at work to protect this endangered big cat. This humid environment is also home to red pandas, brown bears and a colony of bats. The African plains are recreated in the Plains Biome, where you can watch tall giraffes nibbling the treetops, magnificent elephants taking a dip in the watering hole and proud lions stalking their prey.

The Oceans Biome brings the vibrant colours of the undersea world into sharp focus, including a giant touch pool that allows close interaction with sharks. The aquariums provide clear views of a fascinating variety of sea creatures, from giant rays to delicate seahorses, while Flights of Fancy introduces visitors to the brilliance of birds, enabling close-up encounters with feathered friends from the four corners of the globe.

The emphasis throughout the zoo is on education and entertainment through a combination of information and exciting live action. Watch sleek penguins cutting a dash through the water, marvel at the intelligence of dolphins as they respond to hand signals, and cross a rope suspension bridge for unrivalled views of rare white rhinos.

Other attractions include the White River Junction – a guided train ride around the zoo – and the exhilarating Kombo Family Roller Coaster. During the summer months, you can shake off the dust with a refreshing visit to the Kroger Splash Park, or relax under a shady tree in the White River Gardens.

Indianapolis Zoo is on the riverbank of White River State Park, a short hop from the city centre. Admission includes entry to the gardens and aquarium, but the rides and some other attractions cost extra. The zoo is open every day in summer but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the cooler months, as well as on various public holidays.
