Fabulous situationPosted 28-Jul-2014
Pros: The situation
Cons: Bedrooms could be bigger and bathrooms fresher. Biscuits with coffee in rooms
The public areas of hotel lovely and staff friendly and helpful. Rooms could have been bigger and shower curtains were musty.

Pros: There was one member of staff who shone for her friendliness and attentiveness. Other than this lady I can't say there was much else to like.
Cons: Reception staff could be trained in providing a warm welcome and to handle inevitable problems with professionalism.
This hotel was very disappointing and definitely not worth what I paid for my one night stay. The visit was coloured by my reception into the hotel. Within seconds of arriving I encountered a surprisingly hostile receptionist. She stated (incorrectly) that my booking was for a single occupancy room and I would need to pay €30 extra for my 12 year old daughter to stay. This despite my expedia form detailing a booking for a double or twin room. I was unwilling to pay extra on top of their €155 nightly rate which I had already paid. A discussion ensued whereby she implied this problem was of my own making as I had "chosen" to book with expedia. Her attitude was rude and confrontational and left me feeling very unwelcome in the hotel. In addition, the window in the room would not close, the reception on the TV was unwatchable and the shower was unpleasant due to the mouldy shower curtain stuck to my side as I tried to shower. While the food in the bar was good we had to return a dessert to the kitchen as it was obviously stale. Having said all this some of the staff were very pleasant and were extremely friendly and attentive. I will never return to this hotel and when one reads about Ireland's struggling hospitality sector I can't say I'm surprised after my unpleasant experience in this overpriced, overrated, substandard hotel.

last minute get awayPosted 30-Oct-2013 on Hotels.com
I have been in this hotel on many occasions over the years - in the past with my own family and extended family - and have always enjoyed my stay. However, on this occasion I felt that there was a definite down trend in the overall up keep of the hotel - for example within the bedrooms (doorways, presses etc) This is an excellent hotel when it comes to location and service but it does need more money spent on it for its general up keep. The leisure centre most definitely needs more money spent on it to up date it - the ceilings in the ladies changing rooms were old and delapidted and the showers need moderising. I would be sadly disappointed if this lovely - special hotel - continued to decline.

Good but not greatPosted 03-Sep-2013 on Hotels.com
The room was nice. Older but clean and just a bit of wear on the edges. The location is quiet with great views of Galway Bay. Close to the Connemara Airport.
Below expectationsPosted 09-Aug-2013
Wonderful location. Friendly and helpful staff. Great food. Unfortunately, rooms are in dire need of renovation, water runs brown in the bathtub and sink, and accessibility is poor, as the hotel lacks elevators or ramps.

Not what I expectedPosted 24-Jun-2013
Pros: Not much, sadly :(
Cons: Just not our "cup of tea". Definitely in need of remodel
Location: Ferry to the Aran Islands Cork (Blarney Stone) is about 2 hrs south I believe? We didn't find much in the area to suit our tastes
Overall we were not very impressed with this hotel. While it's very beautiful in the lobby and the staff was mostly helpful & friendly the hotel was just not up to par for our expectations. We stayed in another location during our trip in Donegal and it was about half the price, and a better experience! Given this was much more expensive- we expected better. The hotel seemed to be undergoing some renovations- but we saw a lot of areas of the hotel that needed attention. The hallways smelled of mildew. There were no elevators so we had to lug our luggage up and down stairs. We had trouble getting a strong enough WiFi signal in our room to use. The location wasn't as scenic as I expected. It's not a beach like I thought. Just large rocks and a bay atmosphere. Pretty in it's own right- but not enjoyable. We struggled to find things to do locally. There was a ferry to the Aran Islands- but we missed the first launch and after waiting around all day for the next, drove all the way there to find out you had to stay overnight if you went on it- and since we already paid for this hotel, that'd be a waste. People were not forthcoming with information. It was frustrating. Also, this area mostly speaks Gaelic and all signs are in Gaelic- so it was a struggle to find out way around or communicate at times.

What a viewPosted 30-May-2013 on Hotels.com
The views are fantastic. A two and a half hour drive from the centre of Dublin makes the hotel very handy for a weekend away. Food was excellent and the complimentary caraffe of brandy was a nice touch. All amenities were up to scratcth. Very good weekend and would highly recommend it.
