17 miles of coastline await you. You’ll find both beaches right in the city as well as virgin sands away from the hustle and bustle. There is something for everyone! One of the most famous beaches is Levante Almerimar.
Another option is to visit the Cañada de las Norias Nature Reserve, an area spanning more than 340 acres. This makes it the largest marsh in all of Almería. Lace up some comfortable shoes and don your binoculars as there are more than 150 species of birds to spot, among which the stork is a particular highlight. As for vegetation, reeds abound.
There’s also the Punta Entinas-Sabinar Nature Reserve, which covers a whopping 2,000 acres. There, you’ll find no end of dunes and ponds in which you can take a dip, as you enjoy the average annual temperature of 18 degrees. The shrub par excellence of the area is the soft savin juniper, in Spanish sabina, which gives the reserve its name. As for fauna, expect to see plenty of seagulls and flamingos.
A package deal to El Ejido wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Guardias Viejas Castle, a coastal fortification built in the 18th century. This building has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest, and it is where you’ll find a permanent exhibition including a collection of clothing and weaponry from the Napoleonic period. The natural soundings couldn’t be more stunning with its sea views.
To get there, you can fly to Almería airport, although Alicante and Málaga airports are also an option.
