Constanta Casino

Constanta Casino featuring a sunset

Learn about the fascinating historical stages of this eerie abandoned casino that stands on the edge of the Black Sea.

The broken windows and rusting features of the Constanta Casino tell a tale of desertion and neglect. Constructed at the turn of the 20th century as the majestic pride of the city, it went through several phases before closing in the 1990s. Find out about the changing faces of this symbol of the city, after it survived world wars and a communist regime.

Take a romantic stroll along the picturesque promenade overlooking the Black Sea. Capture photos of the grand white building with its colonnade and arched windows. From afar, the site retains its original glamor, but a closer inspection reveals the harmful effects of time.

Enjoy the views of the sparkling sea with this giant structure and the rocky beach in the foreground. See the building at night, when it is illuminated in yellow light against the black sky.

Learn about the casino’s intriguing history. Imagine affluent Romanians arriving for a night of entertainment at the height of its grandeur almost a century ago. It later served as a hospital in World War II, before becoming a restaurant during the post-war communist regime. Ultimately, the building became too costly to maintain and closed down near the end of the 20th century.

Visitors are not currently permitted to enter the building. Peek through the broken windows to see the baroque décor frozen in time. Gaze up at chandeliers and see a dusty red curtain. Admire the intricate features of the building’s front porch, with columns and patterned doors.

Spend time perusing the various ruined parts of the building during a trip to the Constanta Aquarium next door.

Constanta Casino is near the coast in the Old Town area of the city. Walk 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) east past the Primariei Park from Constanta’s center to reach the old casino. Nearby attractions include the Orthodox Cathedral, Great Mahmudiye Mosque and the Roman Building of Mosaics.
