Assens is a small market town on the Lillebælt (Little Belt) which is of great historical importance since it became one of Denmark’s main ferry routes connecting Funen and Jutland. Drive along the coast and enjoy its exquisite seaside location and discover exciting experiences out in the natural surroundings such as climbing to the top of Sønderby Klint, a 30-metre high cliff formed by glacial deposits during the Ice Age. Further down the coast, you can drive across the dam to Helnæs and experience even more beautiful nature, as well as an active cultural life.
In Assens, don’t miss the Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady), Funen’s second-largest church. The church was built in the 15th century and is the only one in Denmark with an octagonal tower topped by an octagonal spire. With a history dating all the way back to the Middle Ages, the church is filled with beautiful details, both inside and outside.
Assens is famous for its brewery, the Bryggeriet Vestfyen, which has been producing beer for 130 years. Take a tour of the brewery, and learn about the different stages of beer production. You will also have the chance to taste the products, which include a classic Pilsner, a variety of speciality beers and soft drinks.
Be sure to also visit Assens Miniby (Assens Mini Village), an experience for the whole family! Here you can see 60 miniature copies of original, classic buildings, which have been preserved for the future. It’s especially fun for the children to walk around between the small houses. It’s also possible to visit the workshop, where you can find out more about how the houses were built.
