Koge Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Koge
Visit eastern Zealand and enjoy a lovely holiday or weekend break in Køge. Wonderful experiences and a variety of exciting opportunities await.

When you travel to Køge, you’ll get the chance to enjoy not only the water and the bay, but also the chance to appreciate the city’s historical importance and its surrounding area. You will find history, art, culture and nature, all of which will provide you with many great memories.

Køge is located at the bottom of the Bay of Køge, near the mouth of Køge Å (Køge Creek), which means there are lots of opportunities for wonderful experiences in and on the water. The two beaches, Køge Nordstrand (Køge North Beach) and Køge Sydstrand (Køge South Beach), are great places to swim and have all the facilities you would expect to find at a popular beach. At Køge Nordstrand, you will also find Køge Marina, where you can enjoy watching the sailboats as well as enjoy what the many restaurants and shops have to offer. In Det Grønne Hus (The Green House), you can hire a canoe and paddle up to Køge Å or rent a bike for a cycle ride around the city or the area.

Køge is a medieval town which was founded by royal charter, as the King wished to establish a city in the nearest location south of Copenhagen where a harbour could be built. While in Køge, you will get to see many relics of history, such as those found at Køge Museum, which is located in an old merchant’s house built in 1619.

If you’re interested in art and culture, don’t forget to visit KØS, a museum for public art and one of the few of its kind in the world. As well as exhibiting artwork, sketches and preliminary work, the museum showcases various temporary exhibitions that question the role of art in public debates and the development of society. This is an experience that will make you think, and it cannot be found anywhere else in Denmark. Also have a look at the museum’s shop for great quality items.

Also visit Køge Maritime Modelbyggerlaug (Køge Maritime Model Workshop), where you can see models of the ships that took part in the Battles of the Bay of Køge. It is an active workshop, where models of famous ships are still built. In the exhibition, you can also see parts of the Linieskibet Dannebroge ship, whose wreck still lies at the bottom of the bay.

The best way to get to Køge is from Copenhagen Airport, which serves flights to and from many cities across the United Kingdom, such as London and Manchester. From here, it’s approximately a 35-minute drive, although you can also take the M2 metro line into the city of Copenhagen, then the E train line to the town, with a total journey time of just less than 1 hour 10 minutes.

Come to Køge and enjoy all the variety it offers. You can relax on the beach or visit an art museum, and even take the opportunity to explore history.
