Eilat
Enjoy glorious days in Eilat on a warm sandy beach with an occasional dip in water that entices you to stay longer. Israel’s southernmost city averages only six days of rain for an entire year. This desert city seems to induce relaxation with its warm, dry winds that blow across the Sinai Desert.
Although Eilat’s coast is a major attraction, there is also much to do on land. Include a desert eco tour to Timna Park 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of the city for hiking, cliff rappelling, jeep tours and camel rides. This area of biblical importance is linked to King Solomon and Solomon’s Pillars. Look for a rock formation known as The Mushroom.
Go on a photo-gathering expedition at Yotvata Hai-Bar Nature Reserve, 9 miles (15 kilometers) farther north, to see elusive and endangered species such as leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, gazelles and ostriches. West of Timna Park is Red Canyon, featuring a short, child-friendly trail with breathtaking sandstone walls displaying a kaleidoscope of soft, pastel colors. Return to the modern city of Eilat for varied cuisine.
The Red Sea is never far away and provides its own attractions on a backdrop of distant hills in neighboring Jordan. Play with dolphins in their natural habitat at Dolphin Reef or follow underwater trails at Coral Beach Nature Reserve.
View marine life below the surface without getting wet at the Underwater Observatory Marine Park. Wander through Eilat Marina with its elegant yachts and motor vessels, as well as a large variety of stores and restaurants. Be sure to experience lively beaches in the Hotels Zone, where something always seems to be happening. Waterskiing, swimming and even ice-skating are available here.
